“I best be careful, they grow up way too fast.” “It could not possibly be my child’s tenth birthday; it feels like they were two years old just last year.” “Wow, you cannot have grown six inches from last year.” These are three statements that might travel through parents’ mind occasionally as they rear their children from birth until adulthood. However, these thoughts are not literally meaning their children are growing up faster than normal; rather, their children are aging normally, it just seems as if time has passed hastily. What if parents knew their children were maturing intellectually, socially, and physically more rapid? There is proof that children are more physically, intellectually, and socially advanced than in previous decades although they are not emotionally advanced than other generations. As well, children’s lives seem busier, and parents are driving their children to be the best. These advancements in development, a tight family schedule, and parents’ impetus for a successful child are all increasing trends of today’s society and generations.
The early maturity of physical development in children can be broken into two categories: early advancement of motor skills and precocious puberty. A child’s fine and gross motor skills can become fine tuned because of the growing popularity of youth athletics and physical health programs. The United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals states that “sport has the natural ability to draw on, develop, and showcase individual strengths and capacities.” It also mentions that sports enhance physical growth and development while simultaneously enhancing psychosocial health and development (“Sport for Development”). Personal, social and emotional developments (PSED) are acknowledged as one of the starting point of accomplishment in life. PSED is about the whole child, how they are developing now, what they can do to reach their goals but also contribute to their community and how children perceive their identity and ability, understand their relation to the others in the society and apprehend their own and others’ feelings. PSED are a part of children’s development where they will be able to communicate effectively and be able to develop positive behavior among themselves and to others. According to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), PSED is consists of three aspects which are self-confidence and self-awareness, managing feelings and behavior and making relationships (DfE, 2012). In this essay, I will discuss the factors that influence children’s behavior , theories of personal social development and the strategies to develop the positive behavior in children to promote PSED, transition and inclusion.
Athletes in times of difficulty can be important role models.” This shows that sports are in fact helpful because they can grow children into being important role models for the rest of society. Studies have shown time and time again that playing sports can be beneficial to children and we also believe this to be true. Many people still think that sports cause “too many injuries”, or coaches “are not fair enough”, but adolescents will experience these things all throughout their lives because injury can happen anywhere and they will not always be the best at what they are doing. Sports are beneficial to the youth because they can teach children and teens important life skills, help them maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle, all while improving their mental health.

When studying human development, it is helpful to understand the main developmental domains (i.e physical, cognitive, emotional and moral) and the ways in which people develop within each domain at certain age stages. Use of psychological theories is also helpful to understand the reasons for this development and the ways in which it manifests at different age stages. The objective of this essay is to analyse the influences on development from conception to late adolescence. It will describe theories of lifespan development with information regarding my own development used to support these theories. There has recently been increasing scrutiny debating the merits of strength training in our youth and more importantly the unsafe and unethical training practices that tend to be utilized in implementing strength training programs in all levels of amateur athletics. These controversies have enabled many people associated in medical and exercise sciences to take a further look at the field of prepubescent athletics and their impact on the developmental patterns of the children involved. The research in the field has provided feedback regarding the physiological, mental and social effects - negative and/or positive - that strength training influences over prepubescent growth and development.

For this writing assignment I decided to research and learn more about motor development growth and refinement due to participation in youth sports. Since I am interested in the topic, I also looked for insight on if it was better for children to specialize in one sport or if a variety of sports provided more benefits for motor development and if strength conditioning was alright for children. I believe that this topic would be suitable for Chapter Ten under Motor Skill Refinement as that section covers partaking in youth sports, school physical education, and collegiate level sports.
