On November 18, 1978, in Jonestown, Guyana, 909 people died from cyanide poisoning in a “revolutionary suicide”. They included approximately 200 murdered children. Afterwards, five others, including California Congressman Leo Ryan, were murdered a short distance away, at Port Kaituma. This was the largest single loss of civilian life in a deliberate act until September 11, 2001. All of these murders were under the direction of one man: charismatic cult-leader, Jim Jones.
The Peoples Temple was an American, Christian cult under the leadership of reverend Jim Jones. The cult was started in Indianapolis, Indiana, preaching anti-racist sentiments, and attracting many African Americans. Subsequently, they moved to San Francisco, where they

were accused of physical abuse of members and mistreatment of children. Growing increasingly paranoid, in October of 1973, the directors of the temple established an agricultural mission in Guyana, South America, with the intention of building a true socialist utopia. Suspicious of their activity, Congressman Leo Ryan from California traveled to Jonestown with a group of journalists in November of 1978 to investigate their settlement. Congressman Ryan’s visit was satisfactory at the outset, but as his delegation was attempting to leave, Ryan was attacked with a knife by one of Jones’ lieutenants.
He escaped from the incident unharmed. However, Ryan and four others were later murdered as they were boarding their charter planes. The gunmen riddled his body with bullets before shooting him in the face. Nine of the other visitors were wounded, but they were all able to escape.
Back in Jonestown, Jim Jones ordered all of the town members to congregate at the main pavilion. The nurses of the town had concocted a mix of cyanide, sedatives, and powdered fruit juice, similar to Kool-Aid. The inhabitants were commanded to swallow the mixture to commit their “revolutionary suicide”. First, the nurses used syringes to drop the mixture down the children’s throats. Then, the adults drank the concoction while armed guards surrounded them.
The following morning, the Guyanese government arrived at Jonestown to evacuate the wounded. The bodies of over 400 of the casualties are buried at a mass grave in Oakland, California. The compound at Jonestown is now deserted and the buildings were mostly destroyed in a fire in the 1980s, after which the ruins were left to decay. The massacre was heavily covered by the media, and the vast majority of Americans were aware of the tragedy. Since the events, multiple organizations have exposed the deceitful motivations of cults throughout the
world.
The cult was mainly composed of men and women both. All members had crew cuts and were between the ages of 26 and 72. Although many members lived together in a mansion in California, they came from all parts of the country. Many were from California, but members also came from Arizona, Colorado, Texas, Florida, New Mexico, Minnesota, Utah, Ohio, and Florida. There were approximatly 39 members who lived in the 1.3 million dollar Rancho Santa Fe mansion. They operated a web site for their cult called “Higher Source”.
The worst mass murder suicide in history was the Jonestown Massacre. The Jonestown Massacre happened on November 18th 1978.More then 900 people were killed in the Massacre, 232 of which were children. The Massacre happened on a piece of land in Guyana that the People’s Temple, run by James Jones, had bought. The People’s Temple was a church run by James Jones who preached about diversity and racism. James was not a real preacher, all of his speeches were based on his opinions and theories of the world. He pretended to be a doctor. People would give him money and he would pretend to heal them. He founded his church in 1965. After getting bad press about his speeches, he took his followers and moved them all out to Guyana, telling them they were going to live in a more communal way. Jones’s followers gave him money supposedly for the church, all the working adults gave at least 25% of their paycheck to him and everyone getting social security checks gave their checks to him. The people of Jonestown raised animals and farmed in the middle of the Guyana Jungle, as their new way of life.

On the 29th o April, 1977 Captain Cook, commander of a British fleet, landed on the eastern shore of Australia, in an attempt to claim the land under the name of Britain. The land was to be claimed by Britain as a land where the British government could send convicts; in an attempt to ease the struggle in the over flowing prisons. Upon Cooks arrival, he was ordered to follow three rules of claiming a foreign land. They were;
The war attracted attention from the police after a while, which led to Police chief David Hennesy getting shot and killed by members of the Matranga. Nine of the Matranga crime family were put on trial for the murder, but before they could be convicted or set free, a lynch mob that was worried that they might be set free, attacked them at their holding cells. Eleven of the mafia members (nine on trial plus two visitors) sucumbed to injuries that they suffered during the attack. None of the lynch mob were charged with murder, because it would be too hard to figure out which members of the mob actually killed them.
The Tlatelolco Massacre In the summer of 1968, Mexico was experiencing the beginning of a new student movement. The students sought liberal reform from the political system in Mexico. These students were determined to reveal the realities of poverty, misery and corruption in their country. (Guttmann) They were involved in different movements that would lead up to one event that would change the lives of everyone, “The Tlatelolco Massacre of 1968”.
Have you ever heard the term, “Don’t drink the Kool-Aid?” or “You have drank the Kool-Aid.”? Well, ”Drinking the Kool-Aid” means you have done something that others have told you to do or did yourself. This saying comes from the cult society led by Reverend Jim Jones, named Jonestown. Jonestown was a small community in the jungle of Guyana, South America. After getting word of people coming to investigate the society, Jones had committed a mass suicide by poisoning Kool-Aid and giving it to the people of Jonestown.

Jim Jones and his infamous cult entitled, “The People’s Temple,” holds an interesting value to social psychology. Jonestown is a topic that can relate back to many sociology terms and ideas. Jonestown can be related to social deviance, the effect of American culture on social groups, labelling theory, charismatic authority, and even shows how societal history often repeats itself. American society during the late 60’s-70’s is what led to the creation of Jonestown. Jonestowns downfall provided a lot of insight to the American public of how society needed to change, proving that the deaths of about 900 people weren’t for nothing.
The True Temple of Solomon in Chicago, Illinois, was established in 1950 as seen on the Church’s website. Prophet Peter Banks, is the founder of this church. In the religion that he preaches he claims that he and his followers are a form of Christianity. After Prophet Peter passed away his grandson Prophet John, was left to take control of the Church and all other property that corresponded with the church. From 2000 until present day Prophet John has been growing as activist in the south-side neighborhoods surrounding his church. Many fundraisers and food drives have been held over the years to help the ...

The Rape of Nanking, also known as the Nanking Massacre was a six week period when mass numbers of Chinese men and woman were killed by the Japanese. Embarrassed by the lack of effort in the war with China in Shanghai, the Japanese looked for revenge and finally were able to win the battle. The Japanese moved toward the city of Nanjing also known as Nanking and invaded it for approximately six months. Even though the people of Nanjing outnumbered the 50,000 Japanese, they were not as masterful in warfare as their opponents. Chinese soldiers were forced to surrender to the Japanese and the massacre began in which around 300,000 people died and 20,000 women were raped. The Japanese leaders had different methods of killing that were instructed to the soldiers. However, the prisoners of this “City of Blood” soon found their liberation and their justice was served.
On that day, November 18, 1978, 912 people died from drinking the poison, 276 of whom were children. Jones died from a single gunshot wound to the head, but it is unclear whether or not he did this himself. Only a handful or so people survived, either by escaping into the jungle or hiding somewhere in the compound. In total 918 people were killed, either at the airport or at the Jonestown compound. Its very sad that the younger people in our generation haven't heard of this horrifying piece of history. ( http://history1900s.about.com,1).
The third cult being discussed is Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple. Jim Jones is ranked one of the most notorious cult leaders. The Peoples Temple consisted of 900 men, women, and children. This group is sadly famous for the mass suicide that took place in the late 1970s, when the 900 cult members ingested a kool-aid blend laced with cyanide. Jones started on this path when his grandmother brought him to her church at age 10. After visiting numerous churches, the young impressionable Jones started to preach to other children. In the mid 1950s, Jones branched out and formed his own congregation called the Wings of Deliverance which then turned into the Peoples Temple. As an attempt to increase the population of his parishioners, Jones aired his homily on the local radio station. Just like Manson, Jones was known for his eloquent speeches that captured the audience. Jones would talk about a better life that is to come. Similar to Paul Schaefer’s teachings from Colonia Dignidad, Jim Jones deterred from any sexual relationships. However, Jones was involved in copious adulterous relationships. Jones got rid of any family bonds and pronounced him to be the “father of all”. Eventually, a paranoid Jim Jones moved the group to Guyana where the compound was renamed to Jonestown. Just like Schaefer, Jones ran this new compound with an iron fist. Similar to the people of Colonia Dignidad, the people of Jonestown were extremely malnourished and often dehydrated. The
On November 18, 1978, a notorious religious organization lead by Jim Jones became international news. As a result of manipulation and isolation, Jim Jones influenced his followers to commit suicide. Not only, but his followers were utterly convinced that what they were doing was for a good cause, specifically, a political movement. With kool-aid and a dash of cyanide, 918 people, adults and children, ended their lives that day. The aftermath of this horrific event resulted in numerous documentaries, on of which being, Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple. Created in 2006, this documentary gives a thorough and accurate account of the events that lead up to as well as occured that day.
