Pelican Brief Research Essay In John Grisham's The Pelican Brief, he uses symbolism to illustrate the blatant disregard large oil companies have for our environment. Fossil fuels, sometimes referred to as crude oil, include natural gas, petroleum, and coal. Fossil Fuels are produced when layers of decaying plants and animals have been exposed to a great amount of heat and pressure for millions of years under the earth’s surface (Lawrence). Fossil Fuels have many uses such as, powering vehicles, heating homes, creating electricity and are essential to manufacturing businesses. In 2012, nearly 82 percent of the world’s energy came from fossil fuels (Lawrence). In The Pelican Brief, Victor Mattiece is the owner of a large oil company. He drills …show more content…

““Fracking,” short for the more formal term hydraulic fracturing, refers to a set of techniques used to extract oil and natural gas from underground rock formations”(Koth). During the fracking process, a well is drilled and a high-pressure liquid is sprayed into the rock formations. The liquid, which is commonly made up of water and a few other substances, cracks the surrounding rocks and allows for more surface area that the oil or gas can escape from. Once the surface area has been increased, the liquid is pumped out, followed by the oils and gases (Koth). Another way to recover oil from under the earth’s surface is called, directional drilling. Directional drilling was developed by engineers in the 20th century. This method of extraction allows oil companies to drill for oil in several different places at the same time, by having a platform with many drill strings attached to it (Lawrence). When oil is extracted from the earth, harmful gases are released that change climate over time (Lawrence). In The Pelican Brief, Grisham does not state what extraction process was used by Mattiece; however, we do know that is was the extraction process of the oil the was causing all the mayhem. “Then oil was discovered there in 1930, and the rape was on” (Grisham 257). Grisham used the symbolism of rape to convey the blatant disregard that Mattiece and his oil company had for the environment; they did not care that they were destroying the environment, just as long as they made their
