Maya Angelou, an American poet, memoirist, and a civil rights activist, once said, “If you don't like something change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude.” Sometimes, the path to change has to start with your own attitude. In the play, A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens, the main character, Ebenezer Scrooge, is a selfish and uncaring man. In the play, Scrooge didn't realize how his attitude towards others could affect everyone around him. However, by the end of the play with the help from the three spirits, Scrooge was able to realize that he had to change his attitude in order to change his future. In the beginning of the play, Scrooge was considered to be a very selfish man. Scrooge didn't care about anyone other than The first spirit that comes to visit Scrooge is the Ghost of Christmas Past, a man with old and young features, a white tunic, a branch of fresh green holly, and fresh summer flowers. The spirit shows Scrooge some of the most regretful moments in his past. The first is when Scrooge lets his little sister Fan go. Scrooge had a very strong bound with his sister and loved her very much. Next, Scrooge saw his former employer Fezziwig. Scrooge realized how well Fezziwig treated him but, Scrooge also realized how poorly he treated Charchit. Finally, Scrooge sees when he lost the love of his life. After, seeing all of these events again Scrooge realized how all of these decision cost him a piece of this of life. After seeing all of these regretful decisions Scrooge states, “Remove me! I cannot bear it!” This shows that Scrooge is now regretting his poor decisions. The second spirit that comes to visit Scrooge is the Ghost of Christmas Present, he is a very jolly man wearing a simple green robe. The spirit takes Scrooge to see Cratchit's house when he is there his family toasts to Scrooge. Scrooge is very confused. He doesn't think they should toast to him because Scrooge is realizing how selfish he is toward Charchit. Next, he sees Fred's house and they also toast to Scrooge. Scrooge realizes how much these people appreciate him, and how selfish Scrooge is toward both of them. Scrooge The Ghost of Christmas Future is a faceless, speechless phantom this symbolizes that Scrooge's future is undecided. The spirit comes to try and help Scrooge realize that if he doesn't change his attitude soon then there will major consequences in the future. The Ghost of Christmas Future first takes Scrooge to his very own bedroom. In his bedroom his a man who lying on the bed it is Scrooge but, he doesn't yet realize it. A group a three people break into Scrooge's home and take anything that looks valuable. One of the robbers stated, “If he wanted to em’ after he was dead, the wicked screw, why wasn't he natural in his lifetime?” This means that all of these people thought that Scrooge was very selfish and he didn't deserve kindness shown to him after he was dead because he never showed it to anyone else when he was alive. The second scene the spirit showed Scrooge was Cratchit's home. In Cratchit's home, the first thing Scrooge noticed is Tiny Tim's crutch in the corner in the room. Scrooge realizes that Tiny Time has died. Scrooge also realizes how little he pays Cratchit and realizes that he needs to give him a raise. Scrooge states, “Are these the shadows of things that will be, or the shadows of things that MAY be only?” Scrooge now realizes that he needs to change his attitude so that his future will change.
