Three themes found in The Outsiders are loyalty, family, and violence. Throughout the movie, there are many examples of these themes being shown. One of the two main groups of the town, the Greasers, show these themes in their loyalty to one another, the closeness of their relationships with each other, and the violence they choose against the Socs. We see these themes many times during the movie through two of the main characters, Johnny and Dallas. No matter what they are going through, they are always loyal to each other. When their own families fail them, they are always there for each other as a chosen family. In addition, they get into trouble through violence and both end up dying in the end. The Greasers were all very close to each other and always looked out for each other. When Johnny and Ponyboy had just fought Bob and the Socs, they panicked and did not know where to go or what to do, and they feared they would be arrested. They found Dallas and asked for his help, who willingly helped them find a place to stay until people stopped suspecting them. Dallas did not have to help them; he could have ignored them and let them go to prison. Instead, he stayed loyal to them and helped them during their hard times. All of the Greasers are frequently showing loyalty towards one another, and looking out for each other. The chosen family is a very significant theme in this story. Many of the characters who are Greasers are rarely ever seen with their biological family. Johnny mentions to Ponyboy that his parents do not really care about him, or show any appreciation for him. While Johnny was in the hospital, he pleaded with the nurse to not allow his mother to visit him. Dallas, on the other hand, does not speak much about his family.
