Exploring Poverty: A Comparative Analysis of Literature

In many places, for many decades, poverty has been in many people's lives. Both the poem “Poverty and Wealth” and The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton include wealth and poverty. Since there is poverty spread widely throughout The Outsiders the poem “Poverty and Wealth” ultimately relates to the book.

Poverty is a very upsetting topic that is very harrowing for those going through it. You may be wealthy, average or struggling at the moment, but either way poverty affects all. From the Poem the labourer and his son were living in poverty, they were struggling. “That I have another mouth to fill” the labourer says in the poem because his money was minimal and he could barely feed himself. He was living and poverty and couldn’t bare the thought to have another mouth to feed, but was brought joy that a child was coming. Some very little and some a lot. There are many things we take for granted in our society like our education, our abundance of food and water and money. So we should be thankful for what we have because many don’t have access to what we do. The labourer very lonely, poor received a son. “And one he left at a labourer's cot”. He may not have lots of money, but is thankful to be brought a son that later learns the value of a great work ethic. In the book Ponyboy lost his parents and also has very little money. When he realized his brother truly loved him he was like a kid in a candy store.”Oh, Pony, I thought we’d lost you”. Ponyboy knew Darry and Sodapop were thinking about hima and were wondering where he was.

As you can see, created themes connect to The Outsiders and “Poverty and Wealth”. Although, the book and poem don’t directly relate they are similar with subject of poverty involved. If you and your family are affected by poverty just remember things can only get
