The Other Wes Moore, written by Wes Moore, just proves this. Growing up in Baltimore, both Wes Moores had similar childhoods. Although both ended up in different places in their lives. One ended up governor of Maryland and the other worked as a carpenter at Jessup Correctional Institution. In The Other Wes Moore, the author and a neighbor have the same name, Wes Moore, and they both begin their lives in similar ways. However, as their lives progress, they begin to part. For example, both “lost” their fathers when they were young. Because of the way their mothers respond to this loss, the boys’ lives begin to separate. Both mothers have different responses to challenges in general, which eventually leads them to respond to their child’s actions in contrasting ways. Throughout this novel, readers learn that depending on how a mother decides to react to the negative actions of their child’s actions, the child can either lead a successful life or lead a life of failure.

Was Wes Moore really more successful than the other Wes Moore because of the choices they made, or was it because of the influences they had in their life that made them who they are today? The Other Wes Moore is a story about two boys with similar backgrounds and similar situations, growing up in similar neighborhoods. The two boys though, end up living two diverse and different lives. The question then becomes “what causes them to change so drastically?” because for all intent and purposes their fates could have been the same. The author gives credit throughout the novel of certain people who made him the man he is today. In the same manner, the author points out how easily his life wouldn’t have been what the people around him are, without the support. The novel does a magnificent job of showcasing the importance of a reliable and present role model in their life to be successful in life.
Not far from each other lived two men who shared the same name, Wes Moore. Both men had the same name but had different paths that led one to be a Rhodes Scholar, while the other would spend the rest of his life behind bars. In the introduction to the book, the author, Wes Moore says, "The chilling truth is that his story could have been mine. The tragedy is that my story could have been his" (Moore, xi). Wes Moore wasn't often the brightest of all teenagers, and it would not be until he was sent to military school where he would figure out what life meant without his mother and the obstacles he had to face.
