The Pardoner’s Tale The old man from “The Pardoner’s Tale” is a key character in the story. The rioters suggest that he is an spy for death, but in the story the old man does not explain on who exactly he is. So it's up for debate on who the old man really is or if he works for death himself. I believe the old man himself is death, I assume he is because he tells the rioters where to find death themselves. How can he know where death lies when death is illusive? He would have to be death himself to know where death is. Death isn’t one certain object, it can take many shapes and sizes. The two plan to attack and kill their third friend, who while he's gone to get wine he goes to the apothecary to get poison for the wine in order to kill them. When the third man returns, his friends kill him and drink his wine in celebration inadvertently killing themselves. Now death in this part is Avarice. “The old man is shrunken and wrinkled, and he begs Death to free him from his body, which is slowly wasting away. Yet despite having knocked on the door of Mother Earth, pleading with her to accept his body, he's condemned to wander the earth until God decides to take mercy and end his life.” Because of the wisdom he imparts, some people think the Old Man represents Jesus in an allegorical reading of the Tale. The Rioters, on the other hand, think he must be in cahoots with Death, maybe because he seems so close to dying himself. But I Think he is death. All three men die, so in essence "Death" claims them. The three men find the treasure and their death because the old man sends them there. Therefore, the old clever, man is death. This is why I think the old man is death because the old man has accomplished his goal in killing the Three young
