Once students become alumni, there are two reasons they return to their alma mater: the first being they return as teachers or other members of the staff. The second and most common reason alumni return is because of the school sins they have committed. They are each forced to return to their gawky teenage personas and endure their fitting punishment. The Nine Sins of School Hell are determined by the severity of the sin and the amount of people their actions have impacted. The first level of school hell is comprised of the procrastinators, the students who delay their work until the very day it is due and give study guides a cursory glance before the test. There are six different types of sinners here, those who are out of dress code, use their phone in class, do not participate, those who sleep in class, do not do homework and those who arrive late or miss class. Because of their ingratitude towards their gift of education they are forced to carry backpacks with the heavy books they never once opened and are forced to be attentive in class. The students who ignored their responsibilities are also now ignored, constantly trying to receive the attention of others. Those who arrive late to school must carry the heaviest books because unlike the others who made an effort to be in class, they purposely ignored their responsibilities. The students in this level avoided their duties but unlike those in level one, made no effort in doing their work which is why they are punished with crooked backs and the constant need for attention. Grace Dunn, who was infamous for skipping weeks of school reigns in the fifth level of hell, her back is permanently bent at an angle from carrying around the backpack overflowing with books because she chose to miss endless days of …show more content…
In the deepest level of hell, the school tyrants who oppressed students mentally and physically and now punished for eternity. They must endure the pain they made their peers feel, from constant name calling to swirlies in the school bathroom, they are tormented with their own actions as well as what caused them to bully. They are forced to face their own personal issues that led to the creation of their monstrous personas and cannot escape their problems. Terry Sire who would pick on the shy students in class as entertainment and Antonio Anders who would pick fights as a result for his parents divorce are found in the deepest layer of hell. Through his eyes, he has experienced two very different worlds which are to be much alike in expectations and attitudes. However, this being not the case, it leads me to question how much the psychological and social effects of being in a remedial class weight on the minds of the adolescent. Dante Alighieri presents a vivid and awakening view of the depths of Hell in the first book of his Divine Comedy, the Inferno. The reader is allowed to contemplate the state of his own soul as Dante "visits" and views the state of the souls of those eternally assigned to Hell's hallows. While any one of the cantos written in Inferno will offer an excellent description of the suffering and justice of hell, Canto V offers a poignant view of the assignment of punishment based on the committed sin. Through this close reading, we will examine three distinct areas of Dante's hell: the geography and punishment the sinner is restricted to, the character of the sinner, and the "fairness" or justice of the punishment in relation to the sin. In modern society, the rules for school are simple and straightforward. To do well in school means to do well later in all aspects of life and guaranteed success will come. Sadly however, this is not the case for Ken Harvey or Mike Rose. Author Mike Rose goes to Our Lady of Mercy, a small school located deep in Southern Los Angeles where he meets other troubled students. You don’t have to worry about the assignment until the day l before it is due, and this is a good thing. as you can zone out and focus on the activity at hand whether that’s browsing online, watching a movie, or hanging out with friends. The assignments will begin to haunt you at first; this will be a challenge that everyone faces, yet you need to realize that paper isn’t going to write itself, and neither are you; at least, not yet. That paper has a long life ahead of it before it needs to get turned in, why make it suffer? Speedily add to it the day before to ensure that no pain goes to the paper. In class, you don’t have to listen, but rather just act like you doing work. You can just look at the notes, that the teacher wrote when you get home. If you forget, it isn’t the end of the world you still have a day to study; the test is tomorrow. Procrastination is the gift that keeps giving. The more you procrastinate, the easier it will get, the more your grades will increase, and the more you’ll have fun. Yet, don’t get too carried away. You must procrastinate but still must complete your assignments. School is important, yet your activities outweigh the need for completion of assignments, so they can wait. Inferno, the first part of Divina Commedia, or the Divine Comedy, by Dante Alighieri, is the story of a man's journey through Hell and the observance of punishments incurred as a result of the committance of sin. In all cases the severity of the punishment, and the punishment itself, has a direct correlation to the sin committed. The punishments are fitting in that they are symbolic of the actual sin; in other words, "They got what they wanted." (Literature of the Western World, p.1409) According to Dante, Hell has two divisions: Upper Hell, devoted to those who perpetrated sins of incontinence, and Lower Hell, devoted to those who perpetrated sins of malice. The divisions of Hell are likewise split into levels corresponding to sin. Each of the levels and the divisions within levels 7,8, and 9 have an analogous historical or mythological figure used to illustrate and exemplify the sin.
Even if he is cruel, it could be for a good reason, even if others can't see it. The author said, “Brace yourself against the corner of the dais and stretch out your legs!” (Munyol 89) This really explains how the teacher is planning on punishing the children for cheating. Even if it could be handled in a much different manner, some of the kids understand what is going on, but others are scared. The author also said, “I wouldn't have laid a hand on you if I hadn't thought it absolutely necessary.” (Munyol 95) This supports my claim because it expresses how the 6th grade teacher is abusing the children because of how the thought that it was ok to assist Om Sokdae. Finally, the author states, “You bent to the unjust power and you weren't ashamed. And the best students in the class too. If you continue to live like that, the pain you will bear in the future is so great, the beating I gave you today won't even compare.” (Munyol 95) This scene in the story explains how the teacher, even after abusing the kids, shows some sympathy towards them and gives them the wise advice of how to change paths and don't keep going down this road, because if they do, you'll only end up in the same situation, but far worse circumstances. In conclusion, I believe that in the story, Our Twisted Hero, the 6th grade teacher is the twisted hero because of his teaching methods, ideas, and philosophies he uses towards the students and how he treats them regarding punishment, and then sympathizes with them afterwards. The two worst punishments in the Inferno is the eighth level second pouch: flatterers and the ninth level of hell with Lucifer eating Brutus, Cassius and Judas. The flatterers are buried in feces due to their lies. It turns whatever they say into excrement and forces them to stand in it no matter if they are telling the truth or not. It is symbolic to the view, as what you say as a flatterer, is nothing but pure crap and you must live with that. Dante’s The Divine Comedy illustrates one man’s quest for the knowledge of how to avoid the repercussions of his actions in life so that he may seek salvation in the afterlife. The Divine Comedy establishes a set of moral principles that one must live by in order to reach paradise. Dante presents these principles in Inferno, where each level of Hell has people suffering for the sins they committed during their life. As Dante gets deeper into Hell, the degrees of sin get progressively worse, as do the severity of punishment.
Dante begins The Inferno by embarking on a journey to Hell with his poet guide, Virgil. Along the voyage, the reader gets a taste of the gruesome imagery and depictions of the punishments for the different levels of sinner. Throughout this journey Dante encounters many sinners whom he knew or knew of in the real world, and in the beginning the sinners wanted their name to be spread in the world when Dante got out of Hell. But, as Dante explored further and further into the underworld, the sinners got less and less enthusiastic about themselves, which eventually turned into outright shame among the sinners in the lower depths of hell. Dante uses over the top examples of punishments for sins committed and the differing levels of shame the sinners feel to cause the reader to reevaluate his or her own life in the context of religious wrongdoings. The over the top punishments and shame are needed in this work of art to relay the predominant meaning.
High school is another vast world where one can explore the depths of the teenage experience: the hell that lies in the dark, bottomless abyss and the ominous heaven with everlasting light and everything else in between. On top of this perpetual rollercoaster of emotions, there’s this other dark force that looms over the head of every student, the beast that devours all happiness in life: homework. Assignments can be tedious and are stacked on top of a student’s busy lifestyle, leading to sleepless nights and weariness. College students have only a few hours of class a week and lots of daytime hours in which to study. She says the college schedule is nowhere as grueling as in high school. When "busy work" assignments are given carelessly and frequently, it causes students to lose interest in the subject.
