The New Sister When I was in 2nd grade, my parents called me into the living room just after eating dinner one night. Little did I know, what was about to happen would change my whole life. I sat down on the couch and they handed me a box wrapped in pink wrapping paper. I opened the box and inside was a shirt that said “big sister” in big sparkly letters. Excited and confused I looked to my mom and dad. “We’re having a baby?!” I asked. 7 months later, on September 2, 2013, my little sister, Julia, was born. Though it’s had its ups and downs, having a sister almost 9 years younger than me has taught me lots of important lessons, such as how to be responsible, care for others, and realize that I can’t always be the center of attention. Most people have siblings a lot closer in age to them than I do, so they can’t remember the important things about taking care of babies and young children. Since I was almost 9 when my sister was born, I have a strong memory of her as a baby. I was able to learn a lot about how to take care of babies at a much younger age than most people. Having the ability to feed babies, change their diapers, play with them, and to know what to do in an emergency situation has helped me to get many babysitting jobs as well as take care of my younger sister at home. I can take on the responsibility of taking care of babies and toddlers after having the experience of having a baby sister at home when I was older than most people. Having a younger sister has also helped me to have more responsibility within my household. We had to establish chores for each person in the family to do in order to keep things more efficient. It was harder to get work done with a new baby around since she was always having to be attended
