As we go about our daily lives we have probably noticed that just about everyone nowadays has their eyes glued to their phone. People are using them at restaurants, at the park and sometimes even at the movies and If we were to observe the dinner table in the homes of most families today, we could probably see the entire family on their phones. Teenagers practically only put them down to shower. Cell phones are used today by young adults for so many things, texting with friends, listening to music, googling information for homework, selfies which they post on overly used social media accounts. Today, we are surrounded by social media. Most teens have on average a Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram accounts. They can stay connected with …show more content…
What are they doing on there every day that is completely consuming them and is it constructive? Young adults on social media have completely created their own image of who they are or who they want to be. With the frequent selfies and mostly positive post teenagers are taking part in, it can be assumed teenagers who use social media have high self-esteem; However, with all the reports of cyber bullying, social media related suicides and the altogether negative stories we all read about, some teenagers are not having such a positive experience. Self-esteem plays a major role in the development of any teenager. High school for example is already a crossroads, but social media could make it all even harder. Now not only do teen girls have the popular girl in school to compare themselves to, they also have the popular girl on Instagram! Boys too, it used to be in the high school hallways where you could see which guy was the most popular with all the girls, now teenage boys can log on Facebook and Mr. Popular is right there! Social media is becoming a punching bag for a teenager’s self-esteem and it goes unrecognized especially by the individual suffering from it. Social media, no matter which site a teen chooses to take part in is overwhelming, and with excessive use it can cause low …show more content…
Carr makes it a point that it is not a matter of what is on the internet that is a problem but the device or medium itself that changes how we think, what we see, and how we see it and eventually if we use it enough it changes who we are as individuals (Carr3). Although I agree with the affects content, what would the medium be? Adding to Carrs argument that” the net seizes our attention only to scatter it” (Carr 118). I would point out that the medium maybe the source of the problem, but the content it carry’s is the most dangerous aspect. what would the medium be? As technology further advances and becomes more evident in today’s society, it creates an overlooked issue with regard to teenager’s use of cell phones. There is no arguing that cell phones can be implemented in a positive manner by making it easier for us to keep in touch with people locally, as well as around the world. However, when not used in moderation cell phones most definitely have a detrimental impact on today’s modern teens. This is not something that has suddenly evolved from nothing, as Albert Einstein predicted, “I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots” (1). Unfortunately, today is that day, technology, or more specifically cell phones have negatively affected us as humans in aspects such as: social interaction, academic ability, and physical health. This conflict is not something that should be glanced over with little thought or concern, but something that people should take into consideration because it is important that we realize that cell phones have negatively effected the way we humans think, act, and interact with each other.
Cell phones posses our lives. As of 2012, 82 percent of American teens, ages 16-17, own a cell phone (“DWI: Driving While Intexticated”). This statistic does not include the 90 percent of American adults (“Mobile Technology Fact Sheet”), and the 56 percent of children ages eight to twelve that own a cell phone (“Kids Wireless Use Facts”). Second graders on up now own a phone. The fact second graders own cell phones is beyond me. A second grader should play outside, construct forts out of blankets, and play with Barbies. I never sat around on an electronic device and rot my brain on social media, and I did not text my friends; I actually saw them, face-to-face. There is no need for little kids to obtain cell phones. Giving a child a cell phone only generates an attachment as they grow up, and they lose etiquette. Kids and adults alike do not know the appropriate time to use their cell phones and social media on them.
In the articles “Student Examines Negative Effects of Social Media on Teens” by Aurelie Krakowsky and “The Upside of Selfies” by Kelly Wallace the first one arguing that the negatives of social media is so severe that it affects students performance at school. While the latter explaining the qualities of social media that shows positive effects. .Even though there is evidence to support that social media is eventfully harmful, however, there is more evidence supporting that social media is helpful.
Cell phones have crept into an owner’s possession at all times. “The mobile phone has become a part of us: our best friend who will save all our secrets, pleasures and sorrows” ("Exploring"). Teens have developed the need to know the latest news on social media every minute of every day; they do not want to miss any little detail. Since the beginning of smart phones, high school students have felt the need to have their media open on their smart phone in front of them so they do not feel empty. Once someone has become attached or addicted to something, it is hard to change their habits. Cell phones have changed people socially, especially with the availability to social media with electronics.
Texting and social media have hurt the lives of teenagers in so many different ways through the addicting and obsession effect it has on teenagers. Teenagers are glued to their computers and iPhones; it has affected their social lives. Most teenagers do not go and see their friends and interact together face to face anymore. The total amount of media use teenagers is 6 plus hours on average, these statistics shows just how much teenagers are affected and addicted to social media. Social media has decreased the face to face communications among teenagers.
Social media is so popular that according to a recent article published by forbes.com, “72% of American adults are currently using social media sites; that figure has gone up 800% in just 8 years”(Olenski). Social networking was originally created to simply reconnect people with old high school pals, but in recent years it has evolved into a completely different operation. When social media first originated it was also intended for adult usage, which has in recent years expanded into the usage of all ages. Social media can create a negative affect on lives because it has been proven to be a dangerous addiction, for it takes away interpersonal relationships that are essential in life, and it has been proven to prevent people from being productive in life.
Recent advancements in technology have created a new form of communication. We call this new type of communication social media. Some of the big names in social media are Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram. Most people today use some form of social media on a daily basis. Social media is most popular amongst adolescents. According to a poll conducted by Infographic, nine out of ten teenagers have used social media. Whenever a new technological advancement occurs there is concern over how it will affect society. In the case of social media, the concern is greatest for adolescents. So, how does social media effect adolescents? Social media can have both negative and positive effects. Some of the effects of using social media can be depression, addiction, cyberbullying and exposure to inappropriate content.
Negative Effects of Social Media on Young Minds Even though people know that social media makes them feel low-spirited, they keep coming back to get a fix and in the end it hurts their self esteem, mental health and many other aspects of their human life more than they originally thought it would. This is how the brain works, it thinks that social media helps, but, in reality, it does more harm than good. There are many areas where social media can have a negative effect on people, but these three topics: academics, mental health, social interaction are the ones getting the biggest impact. Social media has negatively affected education in young minds in terms of academic progress and academic success. When adolescents text, they can ruin everything they learn in school, it can destroy their spelling, syntax, and grammar structures.
In today’s society, much advancement has been made throughout the universe. However, one that seems to stand out in particular is the use of social media. Social media has both positive and negative effects on society. This advancement has led to a difference in communication to everyone by reconnecting with others, or even informing the public nationwide through televisions such as the news or talk shows. However, is social media safe to use? Social media has a great impact on everyone in society. While allowing your children or teenagers to engage in social media a few things to consider are the risks of youth using social media, what age is too young, and also how social media is useful in some cases. Children participate in cyber bullying now and even find themselves involved in bad habits, such as sexting (Schurgin O’Keefe). According to a recent poll conducted, over 22 percent of teenagers log onto their social media site more than ten times a day (Schurgin O’Keefe). Not everything is negative towards social media, but there are precautions that need to be taken when there is the youth involved.
A new study by the Pew Research Center has discovered that 78% of American teenagers (and growing) have cell phones. (“Teens and Technology 2013”) In our society nowadays, teenagers all around the world have mobile phones that are used constantly. While many teenagers love the fact that they can call, send, and receive text messages from their favorite mobile device, I believe this to be a substandard idea: cell phones distract teens and influence them to be less social, cause laziness, and finally mobile phones could result into several shocking health problems.
The light blares the bright, springtime color. A surge of hope rushes through the car, maybe the meeting will be postponed. Suddenly, the car’s brakes are slammed, but it’s too late. A young woman, no older than seventeen rushes out of her car, and apologizes, “Sorry, my friends were snapchatting me!” Distracted driving is one of the many negative impacts of social media. Despite the numerous negative consequences, there are still numerous positive outcomes such as, increased communication skills, a new form of occupations, independence, and even identity discovering, leading to the debate between whether the benefits outweigh the repercussions, allowing for the question, how do the impacts of social media and smartphones affect teenagers’
Communication plays an important role and becomes an essential part in our daily lives. Today we have taken communication to new level as social media and social networking. They have had a tremendous impacts on the word, on our culture and in business as well. Social media websites are some of the most popular on the internet, such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc. They are the places where people can interact with others easily and expose themselves to strangers. Our generation and the younger ones have more opportunities to grow up with the new development of technology that will shape the way they live of communicating and sharing ideas. The social media causes some problems that lead to less social interaction and negatively affect students academic, but it also brings benefit to people that creates new social connections to bring people from all over the world to be closer.
With social media being a source for communication and entertainment and also being easily accessible to any teenager who has a computer or cell phone (O'keeffe, G. S., Clarke-Pearson, K., 2011, p. 800), it is no wonder that the use of this platform has become a habit among teenagers. Due to the convenience that social media brings and provides, teenagers are now afforded with reasons to spend hours a day on social media. For example, teenagers nowadays spend hours on Facebook, updating their status, watching videos and looking through their news feed. They do so be it at home, in school or when they are out with friends. This shows that social media is easily accessible and are used on a regular basis to the point of it becoming a habit. However, teenagers who are more self-disciplined are able to limit their usage of social media to once a day as their main purpose of this platform is merely to stay in touch with friends (Kuss, D. J., Griffiths, M. D., 2011, p. 3530). There are those who can put away these distractions and focus on more relevant tasks at hand. Regardless, studies show that the overall usage of social media increased by two hours per month to five and a half hours and active participation increased by thirty percent (Kuss, D. J., Griffiths, M. D., 2011, p. 3530). With this, it is seen that as social media becomes
attention and actually getting to know something new. For example in one of my many classes we formed a big circle so we can get to know each other and nobody was communicating to each other, everyone was on their phone or iPod. Communication is actually in depth and it shouldn’t be like this, having to talk to people online because in person they won’t pay attention to you is very crazy. Young people are on their phones so much that they don’t even realize when somebody older is talking to them because they are too busy either being nosey on social networks or texting. Another impact social media has on young teens is the way they communicate with people on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram compared to the way they communicate with somebody in person. People no longer know how to communicate face to face and actually sit down and talk over dinner because they are constantly on their phones on these social networks paying nobody any mind especially grown people. They don’t know how to hold a regular conversation with the person next to them because there too busy texting it to them in...
Cell phones have affected the way people type, communicate, their lack of focus, theft, texting while driving, etc; however, with every problem there is a solution. Parents are the key to any problems with cell phone issue. Parents should set rules with teens with their cell phones such as, when they can use it, the purpose, and the consequences if the rules are abused. In contrast, for parents who are worried about their teen’s use of their cell phones, should identify what has caused the concern, how it is impacting the teens life, and what would you like for the teen to do. Overall, it is a very exhilarating to be a part of the technology world but teens need to know the limitations of having a cell
