That shows how intensely those social media influence human’s life. Pew Research Center (2015) reported almost three out of four online adults use social networking sites in 2014. “What is interesting is the power and the impact of social media... So we must try to use social media in a good way.”(Yousafzai) Many believe that the negative use of social media is one of the major problems not only in America but in the world. When social media is overused or not properly used, problems can occur for a person no matter the age or socioeconomic class. One of today’s major issues is teenagers and their use of social media.
From "thintastic" blogs to suicide stories, social media has become not only a source of conversation but a gateway to harmful suggestions that many teenagers see and believe to be allowable, when in fact the situations proposed are dangerous to those who attempt them. Statistics show that 20% of anorexic teenagers will die prematurely, and 80% of teenagers who commit suicide are depressed (South). Social media has glorified and brought to attention eating disorders, depression, and suicide among teens that might otherwise not become a statistic in these critical categories.
As we go about our daily lives we have probably noticed that just about everyone nowadays has their eyes glued to their phone. People are using them at restaurants, at the park and sometimes even at the movies and If we were to observe the dinner table in the homes of most families today, we could probably see the entire family on their phones. Teenagers practically only put them down to shower. Cell phones are used today by young adults for so many things, texting with friends, listening to music, googling information for homework, selfies which they post on overly used social media accounts. At school everyone is talking: “You won’t believe what I just saw on Facebook!” or when a major political occurrence occurs, most people admit “Oh yeah I saw that on Twitter.” It is inevitable that social networking sites have taken a major toll on our lives. The question is whether it is for the better or for the worse. Although many can hold a cogent argument that social networking sites have connected them with friends and family, these sites have led to decreased grades, lowered self esteem/depression, and lost jobs due to the addiction.
Social media is detrimental to society because it has caused people to be more connected through their phone rather than face-to-face interaction. Social media is a worldwide trend that enables people to stay connected through sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and many more. This trend affects people world-wide and people are encouraged to share their lives and views via social media. Consequently, if this trend continues, people will become more attached to their social media and they will not value the time that they could be spending with others face to face.
Purpose of Study Individuals should understand that the use or nonuse of social media has negative and positive effects on their lives, whether they recognize them or not. Students who excessively use social networking applications can be negatively affected because they are spending too much time on these applications rather than paying attention in class, completing homework, studying, sleeping, or focusing on their own health and condition. However, these same students who are excessive users are often times the students who are more aware of global issues and updates in pop culture through the use of social media. Students who moderately use social networking applications spend a good amount of time on these applications and are still able to manage time for sleeping, practicing good eating habits, homework, and studying. These students are usually just as aware, or slightly less aware, than students who excessively use social networking.
With new innovations in technology almost every teenager is some how connected to social media, whether its on their phones, computer or IPod, and most teenagers have smartphones making it easy for them to access social media. Social media affects teenagers in many negative ways, it changes the way they think and interact such as excessive use of technology, allows for cyber bullying and websites causes low self esteem because teenagers see pictures of the “it” look.
The rapid growth of technology in our society has become more dominant than it was in the 17th and 18th century. Today, technology is used for almost everything in our day to day lives. But the most common usage of technology is for communication and industrialization. However, every good thing has its disadvantage if it is over used, and since technology has become very dominant, it is used by both young and older people but more predominant among the youth of the today. Even more, technology has brought about social networking such as Facebook, Twitter, my space, piazza.com, instagram, tango, and last but not the least texting. According to socialnetworking.procon.org, “47% of American adults used social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Classmates.com in 2011, up from 26% in 2008. [26] on social media sites like these, users may develop biographical profiles, communicate with friends and strangers, do research, and share thoughts, photos, music, links, and more” (procon.org. 1). Although these sites help many Americans to connect with their family and friends, have we really thought about how these sites are discouraging some students to spend less time with their books, how young adults are losing their marriages, the indecent behavior it is promoting, and how it has escalated texting and driving in our society? Obviously not!
