Over the years, social media has matured tremendously and having an effect on the way humans communicate with one another. Although social media was originally designed in order to easily connect humans with each other, but instead, has simply become a detriment to interpersonal communication. It cannot be denied there have been positive aspects to its development, but it has mostly created sizable amount of negatives. It is imperative to have good and effective interpersonal relationships through communication because it will remain part of you for the entirety of your life.
Some positive affects social media has had on society are being able to communicate quickly with whoever, has made communicating over long distances easier than ever before, and allows for those with similar interests to share with millions with ease. Nevertheless, there seems there is a much a rather large negative correlation between social media and the stunt of growth in interpersonal communication, than positive.

The use of social networking sites is rising at great rates. According to a report conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project in 2012, ninety-five percent of individuals aged 12-17 use the internet; and eighty-one percent of those use social network sites (Pew Interest). Although it is known that social media can have a useful impact on lives, often times people forget that with a positive comes a negative. The continual use of social network sites will impact teen lives more negatively than positively because they can cause huge distractions from valuable and critical pursuits like education; they can also cause mental health issues and a reduction in communication skills.
Social media has changed the way people communicate with each other and in turn, has affected our ability to empathize in both negative and positive ways. One of the most harmful consequences is the rise of cyber-bullying. Another negative issue has been the trend of trolling in comments sections of websites, chat rooms, and other online venues of communication. In spite of this, there have been constructive consequences due to social media such as the ability for family and friends to keep in touch on a regular basis. Because of social media, many people are finding support and resources to help them when they fall on hard times or experience tragedies like death and illness. Overall, social media is an exciting new world that changes as it grows and it will be up to society to utilize it for good.
The general argument made by Natalie Jacewicz in her article "Social media bad for the minds of young people, right? Maybe not." is that "social media may help improve mental health by boosting self-esteem". More specifically Jacewicz argues that we should embrace social media because it "provides a source of emotional support". I disagree with Jacewicz argument and say that young American women and men my age should limit the amount of time they spend on social media because too much it is bad for their health, both physically and psychologically. Let me explain the divisions of how in details below.
