Carbon dioxide is an important gas that is vital for plant life. This compound is made of a carbon atom and two oxygen atoms. Only 0.0397 of the atmosphere is composed of carbon dioxide. Even though carbon dioxide only makes up a small percentage of the atmosphere, lately increases in the amount carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere have shown to cause an adverse effect on the earth. The rise in amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has caused the earth’s temperature to steadily rise. The term used to describe this effect is called global warming or climate change. Since the 1970s, 90% of the warming has continued on the earth’s surface and in the ocean’s, as well. Even though the oceans dominant role is energy storage, the term global warming is also referred to the rise of temperature in the air and sea at the earth’s surface. There are many causes of global warming as in deforestation, most of the warming comes from the combustion of fossil fuels in vehicles, factories and electricity production. The effects are threatening to our lives, the environment, the wildlife is at risk, etc.
The importance of understanding global warming will control the impact it has on the Earth’s environment. Landfill wastes, industries and deforestation are why global warming exists, in turn will affect all life on Earth.
The commonly debated “greenhouse effect” refers to “the global-average temperature increase that has been observed over the last one hundred years or more” (Spencer). President Barack Obama addressed the issue as an effort to highlight its severity, "We have to all shoulder the responsibility for keeping the planet habitable, or we’re going to suffer the consequences – together” (Leader). The earth’s increasing atmospheric and oceanic temperatures result in climate changes due to cumulative amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere.
