The Facebook Frenzy

During the past two decades or so, there has been very explosive development of the Internet in our everyday lives. The growing use of the Internet has let to a variety social media sites. Facebook has become an essential part of almost everyone’s life, but especially college students. According to the article “Social Networking: Boundaries and Limits” only 10-20%of facebook users are not college aged students (AlDoubi, Anderson, Aragon, & Isaacs, 2014, p. 26). As the use of Facebook has continued to grow by both the number of users and the amount of time each user spends on it, we should be asking one question: Does the use of Facebook help or hurt college students in terms of social and educational opportunities? From a social standpoint, Facebook seems to have a lot to offer. As stated in the article “The Impact of Social Media on Children, Adolescents, and Families” Facebook gives people the chance to donate their time and efforts in the community by notifying them of upcoming events” (Clarke-Pearson & O’Keeffe, 2011, p. 2). Within the article “Me and My 400 Friends: The Anatomy of College Students’ Facebook Networks, Their Communication Patterns, and Well-Being” it states that an experiment preformed at the University of California proved that the more often college students were on Facebook, the more they felt supported from loved ones back home. Also, this made them feel as if they were a greater part of their college campus (Manago, Taylor & Greenfield, 2012, p. 370). .... There also is no purpose to observing because one person would literally have to be followed around all day to get all of the data needed. In order to adhere to the Belmont Report and Common Rule, a disclaimer will be placed at the top of the survey letting the subject know that at any time they have the right to not take the survey and not give their results to me. Also, in addition confidentiality will be kept. Anonymity cannot be done in this case because I have to hand out the surveys directly to the participants. Direct identity will be impossible from the survey because no questions regarding information that specific will be asked. Indirect identity will also be impossible because I am only interested in finding out their student status, not their particular age. Also the survey will only ask if they live on or off campus, not specifically where they live.
