In The Necklace, Mme. Loisel is absolutely mesmerized by a large, glamorous necklace she later finds out is an imitation. It left me wondering, how could I tell fake jewelry from real? Real gold, silver, and precious jewels have distinct properties that set them apart from imitations and make them easier to tell apart. If you believe that you own a fake piece of jewelry, there are many ways to tell. Simulated gemstones are what most people consider mock gemstones. They are cheap and usually made of glass or plastic, and they are not as durable and are damaged easily. This makes the first step common sense: does the piece of jewelry look quality? Does it have any visible imperfections, like discoloration or chipping? Good diamonds usually do not chip, but scratch easily. However, fake gemstones are often color treated to look like the gem they are imitating. If a gem looks too …show more content…
Quality merchants care about their print marketing, so all writing should be sharp, and with good English and grammar. On precious metals like gold or silver, there is always a stamp or hallmark to identify where it came from. Certain brands Tiffany & Co. have their own stamps, and fakers will often change the font or misspell the brand name on jewelry. Each country has its own designated assay offices, such as in the UK, where the only 4 assay offices are London, Birmingham, Sheffield, and Edinburgh. Each has its own stamp to look for. If you have been lead to believe that you have fake jewelry, there are multiple ways that you can test it on your own. For example, one common household test for gold is the “bite test,” where you bite or scratch a piece of gold, and if just a little bit of pressure is applied, it should leave a mark. While this method works, however, it is not completely trustworthy and you could risk hurting your
Deceptiveness of appearances is highlighted in, “The Necklace,” by the necklace of Mathilde’s wealthy best friend, Madame Forestier. She allows, Mathilde to borrow it for the party. The fact that it comes from Madame Forestier’s jewelry box gives it the illusion of high value, when actually it is just costume jewelry. Mathilde would not have worn the necklace if she knew the diamonds were fake, because she believes she is deserving of more. Fake jewels suggest that even the wealthiest pretend to have more than they actually claim. Unfortunately, Mathilde loses the necklace, not realizing the necklace is fake. The fact that Madame Forestier, does not notice Mathilde has replaced the fake gems with real diamonds, suggests that true value is ultimately dependent on perception. In the movie Slumd...

A quinceañera receives a gorgeous gift from a family member on her fifteenth birthday, something that she will carry with her forever. In this cultural celebration for our family, it is very important for the father to give his daughter a special jewelry that resembles his love for her on her fifteenth birthday; the way it presents itself, how it would embody her physically, and how it would be carried throughout the years. My father took time and care in choosing the right gift for his princess. The gift that my father gave me was a necklace that touched my heart. It shines when light hits the gold carvings. It glistens in different shades of yellow when the sun comes out. This necklace started as a real gift of nature, so it has some natural variation in the size and shape. Every ornament is unique! The leaf is plated in copper, nickel, and finally gold. The process of the plating leaf into gold made the importance stronger to me, because it is very time consuming. There are two layers of metals applied to the leaf before the gold was applied. These layers help make the leaf very sturdy and long-lasting. It connects to the chain with an oval clip that has small cuts mimicking the shades and shape of a sea shell. The chain has two thin layers of gold crossing together, creating an ong...

First, one would need to know whether or not the original owner intentionally abandoned the necklace or misplaced/forgot/lost the necklace. In the former situation, they have no possession rights, but in the latter situations, they still have rights to the necklace. Additionally, finding the original owner may be difficult. If they could not be found, it would be hard to determine whether the necklace was abandoned or not, but if they could be found and they had abandoned the possession, the decision for possession rights is between Bonzi and Alpha Corp. However, if the original owner did not intentionally abandon the necklace, they are entitled to possession of the necklace. Even if the original owner had abandoned the necklace, one would still need to know where in the hotel the necklace was found by Bonzi. If the necklace was found in a public area like the lobby of the hotel, Alpha Corp would have rights to the necklace. However, if Bonzi found the necklace in a private are such as his hotel room, he would have rights to the necklace. In a situation where the original owner could not be located, either Bonzi or Alpha Corp would gain possession based on where the necklace was found, and could keep the necklace indefinitely unless the original owner comes
In 1785, the court jewelers, Bohmer and Basange, constructed a necklace with five hundred and forty diamonds of varying sizes in an ugly arrangement that resembled the collars worn by circus animals. They hoped that King Louis XV would purchase it for his favorite, Madame du Barry. Unfortunately, the king died before the necklace was completed. So, naturally the jewelers tried to sell the piece to the newly crowned Queen, Marie Antoinette, because she was known for her extravagant spending and taste. They priced the jewelry at and equivalent of two million dollars in modern money. The Queen declined the offer. She did not like the necklace and the price was even too high for her. Knowing that they would be ruined if the Queen didn’t buy their product the jewelers continued to plead with her for ten years. Each time she turned them down. Then, one day the Queen received a note signed by Bassange which said, “We have real satisfaction in thinking that the most beautiful set of diamonds in existence will belong to the greatest and best of Queens.” Puzzled by the message, the Queen, put the note to flame by a candle sitting on a nearby table (Komroff 85).
Furthermore, the lifestyle both women want ends up in disaster however, one ends in death while the other in hard labor. In "The Necklace", the wife ends up losing her friend’s expensive necklace which causes her to work hard to earn enough money to pay of a new one. Due to all the work she loses her beauty. In contrast, whereas in "The Jewels" the constant attendance of the opera house during the winter causes her to die of inflammation which resulted a deep sorrow towards the husband. Both wife’s lived life differently. Both tries to find the best way to fulfill their desire for the good
In Guy de Maupassant's "The Necklace" and Toni Morrison's "Recitatif," materialism and the desire to be envied are vital ingredients in the themes of the stories. Both authors enhance their themes through the manipulation of plot and the use of women as their central characters. Maupassant and Morrison prove the notion that women are effective characters in depicting themes that deal with the social issue of craving material wealth.
“The Necklace”, narrated by Guy de Maupassant in 3rd person omniscient, focuses the story around Mathilde Loisel who is middle class, and her dreams of fame and fortune. The story is set in 19th century France. One day, Mathilde’s husband brings home an invitation to a fancy ball for Mathilde; to his surprise Mathilde throws a fit because she doesn’t have a dress or jewelry to wear to the ball. M. Loisel gets her the beautifully expensive dress she desires and Mathilde borrows a diamond necklace from Mme. Forestier, a rich acquaintance of Mathilde. Mathilde goes to the ball and has a night she’s dreamed of, until she gets home from the ball at 4 A.M. to find
In the short story “The Necklace”, the main character, Loisel, is a woman who dreams of greater things in her life. She is married to a poor clerk who tries his best to make her happy no matter what. In an attempt to try to bring happiness to his wife, he manages to get two invitations to a very classy ball, but even in light of this Loisel is still unhappy. Even when she gets a new dress she is still unhappy. This lasts until her husband suggests she borrows some jewelry from a friend, and upon doing so she is finally happy. Once the ball is over, and they reach home, Loisel has the horrible realization that she has lost the necklace, and after ten years of hard labor and suffering, they pay off debts incurred to get a replacement. The central idea of this story is how something small can have a life changing effect on our and others life’s. This idea is presented through internal and external conflicts, third person omniscient point of view, and the round-dynamic character of Loisel. The third person limited omniscient point-of-view is prevalent throughout this short story in the way that the author lets the reader only see into the main character’s thoughts. Loisel is revealed to the reader as being unhappy with her life and wishing for fancier things. “She suffered ceaselessly, feeling herself born for all the delicacies and all the luxuries.” (de Maupassant 887) When her husband tries to fancy things up, “she thought of dainty dinners, of shining silverware, of tapestry which peopled the walls…” (de Maupassant 887) As the story goes on her point of view changes, as she “now knew the horrible existence of the needy. She took her part, moreover all of a sudden, with heroism.” (de Maupassant 891) Having the accountability to know that the “dreadful debt must be paid.” (de Maupassant 891 ) This point-of-view is used to help the reader gain more insight to how Loisel’s whole mindset is changed throughout her struggle to pay off their debts. Maupassant only reveals the thoughts and feelings of these this main character leaving all the others as flat characters. Loisel is a round-dynamic character in that Maupassant shows how she thought she was born in the wrong “station”. “She dressed plainly because she could not dress well, but she was as unhappy as though she had really fallen from her proper station.
Between misplacing priorities and self-absorption Mathilde Loisel is created in the story, “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant. Mathilde has just about everything a woman could want: remarkable beauty, a loving husband, and a comfortable lifestyle. Material riches are the only category in which she believes she is inadequate to other women. This one factor sets up the conflict present in the story. Throughout the turmoil she must endure, due to her egotistical ways, one would think she would have a change in heart and mindset. Mathilde has a dissatisfied disposition that does not evolve even as her situation does; she is disgruntled being in the middle class, as well as attending a first class event, and ultimately being in the working class.
As I did research on how others interpreted the story, the same conclusion would pop up. The necklace was used as a symbol of higher class of wealth. We use symbolic items to try and fit into societies belief of “fancy”. The deeper meaning is within the true value of the necklace. It is a fake just as she is! She is trying to be something she is not and ends up losing the necklace which holds a false value as well. This is why a person should not take everything as it
