The story Navajo Lessons conveys the theme that “It is important to learn and appreciate your heritage.” This story is about a girl, Celine, and her brother that visit her grandmother on the Navajo reservation in Arizona. Celine arrives at a place in the middle of nowhere at her grandmother’s house and is not excited because she had better plans for the summer. Her family is encouraging her to deal with it and make something good out of it. Over time, Celine learns that this trip was worth it because she realized that it is important to learn and appreciate your heritage. As Din4 people (Navajo people) our community is known as “The home Chief Manuelito’s Wife”. Chief Manuelito was a head Dine chief during the Long Walk period in 1864. In the year of 1868 Manuelito and other leaders signed a treaty act to end the period of imprisonment. Also, during this time the Navajo reservations were established. Tohatchi was one of the many communities that were established on the Navajo reservation. The Navajo reservation spreads across New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah. The Navajo Nation is known for being the largest tribe (Discovernavajo 2015). Tohatchi is located in McKinley County.

In this story, one of the original Navajo Code Talkers, Chester Nez, tells his story of what it was like to be a Code Talker. The role of Code Talkers was very important because they gave codes to soldiers on the front lines. These codes were secret messages sent regarding battlefield strategies and other types of details.In the text, the information that was sent was very crucial to the war’s outcome. According to the passage,they were also one of the most important roles in World War II. In the text, this was because their codes were unable to be cracked. This means that the role of Code Talkers was very important because their code was never able to be cracked and so it helped the Allies a lot.

This story takes place in 1942-1945, taking place in the following Arizona/New Mexico Navajo reservations, Navajo boot camp and Code Talker school at Fort Wingate, Japanese battles such as Saipan, Iwo Jima, and Guadalcanal. The Diné, or Navajo, exhibit in the Arizona Museum is organized in an appropriate manner. The exhibit starts with the introduction to the Diné people, discussing the Athapaskan Migration. It then displays a beautiful sand painting done by a Diné man which represents the Diné Bikeyah or homeland. The Diné are introduced as a pastoral people who adopted customs from other native peoples as they migrated south to present day Arizona. The next topic discussed in the exhibit is the Long Walk, or the forceful movement of Diné people to Fort Sumner in 1863 and the return to Diné Bikeyah in 1868. Pastoralism is then discussed more in depth including how pastoralism and specifically sheep effected the Diné economy. The importance of weaving rugs is introduced as well. Sheep were an important part of the Diné culture, not only economically, but through kinship and community as well. The sacred narrative of Spider Woman was an audio recording within the exhibit accompanied by a modern day scene of women weaving rugs and spinning their own wool into yarn. This scene is important because while it shows the Diné living in a modern home, it shows how they blend modern day lifestyles with sacred Diné tradition. The conclusion of the exhibit discusses this blend with the modern day and traditional as well as displays rugs both modern and traditional.
During the Pacific portion of World War II, increasingly frequent instances of broken codes plagued the United States Marine Corps. Because the Japanese had become adept code breakers, at one point a code based on a mathematical algorithm could not be considered secure for more than 24 hours. Desperate for an answer to the apparent problem, the Marines decided to implement a non-mathematical code; they turned to Philip Johnston's concept of using a coded Navajo language for transmissions.

The Phoenix Indian School holds the largest amount of significance for American and Native American history in Arizona. However, some may still argue that this is not true. The Phoenix Indian School was an off-reservation school used to assimilate Native American children into mainstream American society in the 1800s. It was opened in Phoenix in 1891 and was closed in 1935 and had focused on providing the children with vocational training. They are known for doing rituals, ceremonies, and having their mysterious beliefs. This involves witches, “skinwalkers,” and medicine-men. Many of these topics are recognized in Bless Me, Ultima written by Rudolfo Anaya. The story features a boy who is conflicted between several cultural traditions. Ultima, a wise curandera – or healer –, guides and watches Antonio throughout the story. The impact of culture significantly affects the characters and their actions. Anaya introduces many subjects that are very similar to the Navajo and its vital aspects of life. Among the topics alike factors are connections to the land, healers, witches, religion, and many more. The Navajo lifestyle, culture traditions and beliefs are very similar to the indigenous subjects of Rudolfo Anaya's Bless Me, Ultima.
The way that Tapahonso describes the whole ordeal in detail is critical in describing the events in the poem but also in the format of oral story-telling. The author is telling a story to a daughter. A story that must have been passed down for generations and for generations to come. It is a important story that must be told because it explains the history of the Navajos and how the use of turquoise become a part of the traditional regalia. The story also tells how Navajo fry-bread become famous and is now considered a traditional food for all native tribes. Tapahonso gives strength and hope in 1864 to the younger generation by giving them education of their history.
The most phenomenal thing about each individual culture though they may be similar in some ways they vary in the most impeccable manner that makes that group of people unique such as the Navajo Tribe. “The Navajo are natives of the Four Corners region (Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado). The Navajo people are still living in their traditional territory today. The Navajos live on a reservation, which is land that belongs to them and is under their control. The Navajo Nation has its own government, laws, police, and services, just like a small country. However, the Navajos are also US citizens and must obey American law.) Redish, L., & Lewis, O. (2011). Every belief or tradition are what make the very aspect of the Navajo tribe. In traditional Navajo belief, all illness or misfortune arises from transgressions against the supernaturals or from witchcraft (Adams). Consequently, medical practice is essentially synonymous with ceremonial practice (Adams). There are particular kinds of ceremonies designed to treat illnesses caused by the patient's transgressions, by accidents, and by different kinds of witchcraft (Adams). Apart from ceremonial practices, there was formerly a fairly extensive materia medica of herbs, potions, ointments, and fumigante, and there were specialists who collected and applied these (Adams).
The Navajo Indians have a rich spiritual culture. There are many sacred aspects to their religious practices and beliefs. One very interesting aspect is the healing ceremonies in which their Shaman or medicine man, as we might call him create sand paintings. I will be providing a brief history and the significance of these religious items more specifically sand paintings and the purposes and beliefs that surround them as well as discussing the debate that has sparked over their being produced in a permanent art form.
