My motivation to learn how to cook was my child. Before I had children, I always watched my grandmother cook. She made all types of things. My favorite was collard greens and fried chicken. When I tried to make fried chicken for the first time, I didn’t fry the chicken all the way through. The chicken still had blood in it. After watching my grandmother fry chicken a few more times and trying to cook it over myself, I got better at it. I started challenging myself more and more. When I took a bite into the chicken I fried, there was no blood. The chicken was fully cooked. After that my confidence level went sky high. I said to myself, “cooking is a piece of cake to me now.” I fried chicken twice a week, I even started to put my own taste of seasonings in it. Once I mastered making the fried chicken, I then taught my brother how to make it.
When learners feel unconfident or anxious, certain feelings flow through the synapses to shut them down. When learners feel more confident, different chemicals flow into the synapses to make them work quickly and well. The more we grow the more we know. I use my skill on a daily basis. I cook breakfast, lunch and dinner for my family. I even prepare snacks throughout the day. I also cook for different events such as, baby showers and parties. The learning process in human beings is very natural, and we all want to learn from a very young age. Doctor Rita Smilkstein studied learning in humans for many years and has found this to be true. After reading this paper and learning about how the brain works during the learning process, you may be able to find a time in your life where you utilized the learning process, just as I began to think about how I have learned something using techniques similar to the NHLP. Learning is important for countless reasons, the most important reason being that it molds a person into who he or she is. What people choose to learn, and also what they choose not to, create the core of their opinions as individuals. Though people do not admit it or openly declare it, it is fair to say almost everyone is self centered. Matthew L. Sanders discusses the necessity of taking responsibility for one’s own education in a section of his book Becoming a Learner: Realizing the Opportunity of Education. In this section, Sanders explains how he initially blamed an instructor for not teaching him sufficiently and then learned that “No matter what kind of teacher you have, no matter what kind of class you are taking, if you are a learner you will set out to understand the material and create opportunities for success.” This statement is true and the concept can be applied through many methods to create success for students if they are willing to put forth effort.

Dr. Smilkstein’s learning process is brilliant. The Natural Human Learning Process describes the six steps that the human brain goes through when learning something new. The process describes the way we learn different skills and the way our emotions can determine the way we learn. This process has helped me and other humans to understand the way the human brain works along with the way we learn.
“Motivation is the process whereby goal-orientated activity is instigated and sustained” (Schunk, Pintrich & Meece, 2008. As cited in Eggen & Kauchak, 2010, p.284). Motivation comes in many forms and can be divided into two broad categories - extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivators are external factors which can motivate a student; rewards are an example of this. An issue with extrinsic motivators is that the desire for the learner to participate often lessens, once the rewards are withdrawn (McCullers, 1987). On the other hand intrinsic motivation comes from within - learning for the joy of it - where the desire to learn leads to a higher level of knowledge, and is a reward in itself. Kohn (1996, p.285) states that research suggests, “Rewards actually decrease interest in intrinsically motivating tasks, therefore sending the wrong message about learning” (as cited in Eggen & Kauchak, 2010a)
The first step of the learning cycle is information (experience), which continues on to meaning (reflection), then ideas (abstraction) and finally action (testing). As Zull describes in his book, when we learn we change; we do something new or better, or we may stop doing something altogether (2002). The completion of the learning cycle is heavily influenced on the stimulus of emotions and its influence on motivation, attitude, and behavior. Learning is the attainment of new information or knowledge, skills, or responses from experience that causes a fairly permanent change in behavior. There are several ways that a person or animal can learn, but no one theory is solely responsible for how they learn.
The human brain is so interesting because of all of its functions. The brain is so unique every function is unique and the brain is capable of doing anything. In the video “Building Your Brain: Inside the Human Body” we can see how all of this function take place and see the wonderful things are brain can do. In the video “Into the Mind: Emotions” we can also see how important our brain is when it comes to our emotions. These two videos discuss really important things about our brain.
Motivation to learn- The motivation is possibly for self-esteem, recognition or the possibility of a better quality of life.
Social cognitive theory of learning is a theoretical perspective that focuses on learning by observing others and eventually assuming control over one’s own behavior (Ormrod, 2011, p.323). Social cognitive theory is a perspective that helps us understand about learning by observing other people doing the same thing. This theory is a blend of behaviorism and cognitive psychology (Ormrod, 2011). Behaviorism theory relates to learning as a stimulus- response relationship and suggests that learning involves a behavior change whereas according to social cognitive theory learning is an internal process that may or may not lead to a behavior change. For example one might attempt to ride a bicycle as soon as they learn to ride the bicycle but learning how to put air in the bike may not be needed until the bicycle need air.
Being motivated is an important to being successful in studying. Cottrell (2003) suggests that, you would need to have a high level of motivation to help you stay focused and find ways to help you through any problems that may occur during studying. For instance, I will be using many steps to help me implement this skill into my studies. Sometimes you will just have to use the mind frame of just do it to motivate or you may need to create a strategy to help you. A strategy that I will use to help increase my motivation is by rewarding myself for studying, for example, once I have finished the required goals for my day I can go watch an episode of my favourite show. Another strategy to help me with my studies would be to create a motivational poster. This would be a poster placed in my study area that includes positive words, quotes and pictures that will help motivate me to be successful. Finally, reminding myself of the long term goal and what I want to achieve will help with my motivation. Learning is defined as a “process of change that occurs as a result of an individual’s experience” (Mazure, 2006). Researchers assume that the process of learning follows certain general principles, which were developed, into the general process learning theories. These include operant conditioning and classical conditioning which has been put forward by leading psychologists like Pavlov, B.F.Skinner and Thorndike. However, in learning, operant and classical conditoning are opposed by biological constraints that state that there are limitations to the theories. Some of these biological constraints on learning will be discussed below.
