I kind of blame the narrator for Doodle’s death, but I don’t blame him fully for everything. The narrator taught Doodle how to walk because he was ashamed to have a brother with disabilities. But he also wanted to be proud of himself by teaching Doodle how to walk, and proud of Doodle by him walking with the narrator’s help. The narrator knew that Doodle needs to be taken care sensitively, but he tried to teach Doodle how to walk anyway. That resulted them going to the Horsehead Landing after the Red Scarlet Ibis’ dead.

This quote has a simile, which shows how the fifth-grader feels about her cousin Eddy. The simile allows the readers to make a prediction that the fifth-grader and Eddy get along pretty well because the narrator never describes him as scary, mean, or distant. The simile effects the narrator’s characterization because it make the fifth-grader seem gentle and excited to be around people. The character is given characterization through similes. In the short story, “The Scarlet Ibis”, we know that the theme is, one day everything will end, so instead of wanting and wishing for more, appreciate what you have now. This is true because the quote, “I wanted more than anything else someone to race to Horsehead Landing, someone to box with,” displaying that Brother wanted a younger sibling, but soon realized that his sibling William Armstrong (Doodle) would not be able to play like other children. Although the narrator of the story contributes to Doodle's death, the narrator actually enhanced Doodle's short life helping him live more than he helps him die. The opening paragraph of the story contains a metaphorical passage: "I stared at it in the swinging light of the subway car, and in the faces and bodies of the people, and in my own face, trapped in the darkness which roared outside"(349). This reference is significant because it is a contrast to the dismal society that the narrator and his brother Sonny live in. The darkness is the portrayal of the community of Harlem that is trapped, in their surroundings by physical, economic, and social barriers. The obvious nature of darkness has overcome the occupants of the Harlem community. The narrator, an algebra teacher, observes a depressing similarity between his students and his brother, Sonny. This is true because the narrator is fearful for his students falling into a life of crime and drugs, as did his brother. The narrator notes that the cruel realities of the streets have taken away the possible light from the lives of his brother and his students. The narrator makes an insightful connection between the darkness that Sonny faced and the darkness that the young boys are presently facing. This is illustrated in the following quote:

Therefore the readers gets the sense that the narrator is the boy all grown up. He is recollecting his epiphany within the story allowing the readers to realize themselves that the aspiration to live and dream continues throughout the rest of ones life. The narrator remembers this story as a transformation from innocence to knowledge. Imagination and reality clearly become two different things to the narrator; an awareness that everyone goes though at some point in their life. It may not be as dramatic as this story but it gradually happens and the innocence is no longer present.
The poem’s use of the dramatic monologue places the reader in the child's position, listening to his mother speak of her lessons learned and applying them to his own life. The narrator’s motivations are understandable. I see the reasoning to attempt to teach doodle how to be a normal child. From the beginning of the story, everyone believes that Doodle won’t be able to live at all, much less a normal life. I, personally, love a good underdog story and Doodle becomes the ultimate underdog to root for. I believe that, although the narrator had some selfish motivation, he also simply wishes for his brother to be normal and defy his apparent destiny. Aunt Nicey foreshadows the ending by stating that caul babies like Doodle can become a saint. Typically, saints don’t live long lives, but they are especially fulfilled and close to God. I believe that Doodle exhibits some saintly characteristics within the story. Even after his mother forbids him from going to help the ibis, Doodle still goes out to bury the bird. I feel as though this is an allusion to many of the stories within the bible; Jesus heals the leper, for example. The choice of the word saint brings about views of the bible in my eyes, so I believe that Doodle’s actions are definitely saintly. The narrator also mentions that “People in his (Doodle’s) stories all had wings and flew wherever they wanted to go.” I feel as though this alludes to angels which are also
The novel can be summarized as a book about two struggles. One struggle is between fact and imagination and the other is the struggle between two classes. Thomas Gradgrind, the father of Louisa, Tom, and June not only stresses facts in the classroom in which he teaches, but also at home to his family. He has brought up his children to know only the “facts.” Everything is black and white, right or wrong with nothing in between. Gradgrind does not like the idea of going to the circus or having flowered carpet. Everyone knows a person cannot have flowered carpet. He would trample all over them and they would end up dying. The second struggle is between the classes is illustrated between Stephen Blackpool and Bounderby. Blackpool represents the working class and Bounderby the bourgeois or middle class. He is a warm-hearted man who feels he deserves this mediocre life. Blackpool was once an employee under Bounderby and was fired for standing up for his beliefs.
