While one of the most traditional interpretations of “A Rose for Emily” is the variety of meanings for the “rose” presented in the title and how the “rose” fits in with the story. Laura Getty states in her article many varied perspectives that many could ponder when identifying what the “rose” stands for. She states many possible theories that depict what the “rose” means, including theories of other writers that help support her own theory and also that adds another way that most might not consider at first. Most of the interpretations of the rose are all focused on the “internal elements” (Getty 231) rather than the actual rose itself. Getty theorizes about certain characters, buildings, anything that symbolizes a rose in the story as the possible meaning of the “Rose” in the title. As Getty states her own theories and those of scholars, she theorizes that “if these various symbols [Homer’s body, Emily’s state of mind, the narrator’s tribute] in the story are petals in the rose, it is important to note that the ‘Rose’ of the title gathers all of these references together in a way that moves beyond any one source” (231). This quote simply means that all of the symbols that have been derived from the story could be the petals to the “rose” that make up the actual rose itself. “The story is, after all, a literary construct, and it is constructed under the title, or in this case sub rose” (231) which is another position Getty states. However, since we do not actually know what the rose stands for, maybe that is how the author wants it to be: a secret kept in complete secrecy. Getty quotes Hendrickson who helps support Getty’s theory of sub rosa, saying:

The second adjective, “inescapable,” refers to the incident of “the smell” in Part II: as the body of Homer Barron decomposes, the town cannot escape this graphic testimony to Emily’s presence in the community. The third adjective, “impervious,” would serve as an ideal title for Part III: Emily stonily refuses to concede to the law in the regard to the purchase of poison (53).
I thought this was a brilliant connection that Petry made and I completely agree with all of her connections made with the adjectives and the time of the story.
Getty interprets that the “Rose” could possibly represent Homer as a “relic of the past.” According to her, Homer’s body was similar to “a rose pressed against the pages of a book, since Emily kept his body for many years. The critic believes that Faulkner deliberately manipulated the title to possibly create a tribute to Miss Emily for not recognizing her own bizarre actions. Getty argues that Faulkner chose this title for the story to represent “secrecy” throughout by not revealing Homer’s murder. Although some of the readers might have guessed it, neither the narrator nor the author disclose Emily’s actions. After being the only man in her life Emily’s father dies and she finds it hard to let go. Like her father Emily possesses a stubborn outlook towards life, and she refused to change. While having this attitude about life Emily practically secluded herself from society for the remainder of her life. She was alone for the very first time and her reaction to this situation was solitude.
William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" is a story that uses flashbacks to foreshadow a surprise ending. The story begins with the death of a prominent old woman, Emily, and finishes with the startling discovery that Emily as been sleeping with the corpse of her lover, whom she murdered, for the past forty years. The middle of the story is told in flashbacks by a narrator who seems to represent the collective memory of an entire town. Within these flashbacks, which jump in time from ten years past to forty years past, are hidden clues which prepare the reader for the unexpected ending, such as hints of Emily's insanity, her odd behavior concerning the deaths of loved ones, and the evidence that the murder took place.

In William Faulkner’s short story “A Rose for Emily” Miss Emily Grierson holds on to the past with a grip of death. Miss Emily seems to reside in her own world, untarnished by the present time around her, maintaining her homestead as it was when her father was alive. Miss Emily’s father, the manservant, the townspeople, and even the house she lives in, shows that she remains stuck in the past incapable and perhaps reluctant to face the present.

The essay that I´m going to do is about A Rose for Emily, which was written by William Faulkner and was it was his first work published in a national magazine. In the introduction of the essay I´m going to stablish the context in which we can find A Rose for Emily. It is a short story included in the collection called the Village, collection that also includes several works like DRY SEPTEMBER, HAIR OR THE EVENING SUN. The works in this collection have three things in common, the community, which as we are going to see a very important character as a whole, the solitude of human beings which in the case of Miss Emily is what makes us sympathize with this woman, but also is what makes us see her as a victim. Finally, something these works have in common is that they are built by the point of view of an uncommon narrator.

Symbolism that “A Rose for Emily” displays is Miss Emily’s taxes that represent death. First is the death of her father. The taxes are a symbol of the financial remission her father experiences, but keeps hidden from Miss Emily and the town. Thirty years later, after the initial decline of Miss Emily’s taxes, the newer generation attempts to retract the deal of the past. In the new generation, the taxes now symbolize the death of Homer Barron. Although the taxes are a deal of the past, there is an effort in Miss Emily to keep them a thing in the present.
