The Mysterious Marie Celeste
On December 5, 1872, the merchant ship Dei Gratia was on its way to Italy when it came across a disturbing sight: a ship drifting aimlessly in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The crew of the Dei Gratia attempted to hail it, but there was no response. The captain looked through his spyglass for any sign of life, but the deck of the ship was completely empty.
The crew of the Dei Gratia decided to go aboard and investigate. That is when things got even more eerie. The closets were full of clothes. The ship’s cargo (1,701 barrels of raw alcohol) was undisturbed. The alcohol was worth $35,000. Everything seemed to be in its proper place–everything except the crew. There was not one person to be found.

It was as if everyone had simply vanished. This ship was the Mary Celeste, a 100-foot vessel weighing almost 300 tons. Built in Canada but registered in New York, the ship was partly owned by Captain Benjamin Spooner Briggs. He was supposed to be the captain of the vessel for a trip from New York to Genoa, Italy–a trip that would be his last. Captain Briggs was joined by his wife, Sarah; his two-year-old daughter, Sophia Matilda; and seven crew members. There are several myths surrounding the Mary Celeste. Legend has it that steaming cups of tea and half-eaten breakfasts were in the galley. Sailors also tell stories of a clock turning backwards and a ship’s cat walking around the lonely deck. Others say a blood-stained knife was found aboard. These, however, are likely to be tales that were exaggerated over time. What we do know is that eight days after the Mary Celeste began its journey, the Dei Gratia set sail from New York harbor. Following the disappearance of Briggs and his crew, a formal investigation was held. In a crowded courtroom, Captain Morehouse told a courtroom of people that he had eaten with Captain Briggs before their voyage. Morehouse read portions of his journal to the court. In the journal, Morehouse had recorded details of a heavy storm in the mid-Atlantic. As the Dei Gratia approached the coast of Europe, Morehouse noticed the Mary Celeste was apparently out of control. After signaling to the ship and receiving no reply, Captain Morehouse told the court he decided to board the vessel to find his friend, Captain Briggs. Morehouse said, “The Galley was in a bad state, the stove was knocked out of its place, and the cooking utensils were all over the floor. The whole ship was a thoroughly wet mess. The Captain’s bed was not fit to sleep in and had to be dried.” Unfortunately, no one could figure out what had happened to Captain Benjamin Briggs, his family, or the crew.
However, one crew member from the Dei Gratia stated that the ship’s lifeboat was missing, as well as a few navigational instruments, and most of the ship’s official papers.
Strangely, all of its cargo remained on the vessel. It seemed the crew had left in a hurry, but the mystery continues to interest people today. What exactly did happen to the crew of the Mary Celeste?
As for the Mary Celeste itself, there was more bad luck to come. Over the next 13 years, the ship had 17 different owners. Three of its captains died on board the ship. It was rumored that the Marie Celeste was cursed.
Then, in January 1885, Captain Gilman Parker purposefully ran the Mary Celeste into a coral reef off the coast of Haiti. He was trying to sink the boat as part of an insurance scam.
When the Mary Celeste did not sink, Captain Parker tried to set it on fire. Even then, the boat could not be destroyed–but it would never sail again. Finally, the ship was left to sink, on its own, to the bottom of the Caribbean Sea. The Marie Celeste remains there to this day, buried in a watery grave along with its
secrets. Note: The Marie Celeste was immortalized in a story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. He wrote the classic, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. If not for Conan Doyle, it is unlikely that anyone would have known, or even cared, about the Mary Celeste.
It was July 30th around 11:30 at night. Hashimoto, the captain of the I-58 Japanese submarine climbed up on the bridge. He picked up binoculars. Hashimoto saw a ship because the moon was behind it and gave the order to dive. Hashimoto was very concerned that it was a destroyer ship coming to attack the submarine. Hashimoto could not get a good look at the Indianapolis because it was not zigzagging.

The Commander of the division to which I belonged, as soon as soon as we were on board the ship, appointed me to boatswain, and ordered me to go to the captain and demand of him the keys to the hatches and a dozen candles. I made the demand accordingly, and the captain promptly replied, and delivered the articles; but requested me at the same time to do no damage to the ship or the rigging. We then were ordered to ...
She booked an immediate passage back to New York on the first available ship: the ill-fated R.M.S. Titanic. After the ship struck the iceberg, Margaret worked tirelessly to help load women and children into the lifeboats and get them settled. Eventually, she was forced to board lifeboat 6. Aboard lifeboat 6, she organized women to handle to oars and attempted to dispel the gloomy spirits. When the crewman in charge of the lifeboat proved too cowardly to go back and help rescue those in the water, she threatened to throw him overboard. Though their boat did not go back to help those in the water, Margaret assumed command of the boat until it was picked up hours later by the Carpathia, which came in answer to the Titanic’s distress calls. Once aboard the Carpathia, she was able to console survivors who spoke little English through her knowledge of foreign languages. She also rallied first class passengers to donate money to the survivors who had lost everything in the tragedy and, by the time the Carpathia reached New York, she had helped found a Survivor's Committee and raised $10,000. She was surrounded by reporters when they docked and, when asked what attributed to her survival, she replied “Typical Brown luck, we’re unsinkable”, which earned her the nickname the ‘Unsinkable’
The USS Indianapolis (CA-35) was commissioned at the Philadelphia Navy Yard on 15 November 1932. The ship served with honor from Pearl Harbor through the last campaign of World War II, sinking in action two weeks before the end of the war. On 30 July 1945, while sailing from Guam to Leyte, Indianapolis was torpedoed by Japanese submarine I-58. The ship capsized and sank in twelve minutes. Survivors were spotted by a patrol aircraft on 2 August. All air and surface units capable of rescue operations were dispatched to the scene at once, and the surrounding waters were thoroughly searched for survivors. Upon completion of the day and night search on 8 August, 316 men were rescued out of the crew of 1,199.
When the Manie sank there where 2 separate explosions ammunition continuted to explode for hours after the blast. Some people say that the Maine was torpedoed or blown up with under water explosives by the Spanish Navy, others say that the 896 ton capacity coal bunker exploded but most people at the time said that the ship was torpedoed and blamed Spain for the sinking of the ship. After the disaster an official court of inquiry was held to determine the cause of the blast. The Navy said that the ship was sunk by a water mine, but stated that it could not fix responsibility on any single person or persons.
It happened on November 10, 1975. Edmund Fitzgerald was about to make its trip to Detroit MI with only one mission at hand: to deliver ore. That was all there was to it. But the members of the ship had gotten much more than what they had bargained for. They thought that they would be okay. Or so they thought?
... (Lukee 3). Not one survivor emerged from the wreckage and the fate of the ship lasted unknown for almost three centuries (Lukee 2). The wrecked slave ship was found in 1972, during a magnetometer survey, operated by a subsidiary of Mel Fisher's Treasure Salvors, Inc (Lukee 4). Some artifacts were collected from the wreck that included bilboes and iron shackles that were used to restrain slaves (Lukee 4). When they realized that the wreck was most likely a slave ship and not a treasure ship, the company reburied the ancient findings and pieces of the ship hull that they had exposed and left the site.
The ship had undergone an experiment that caused it to disappear from the Philadelphia Navy Yard, reappear in Norfolk, Virginia, then return rematerialized back to the ship yard just short of 15 minutes. It is said that this rematerialization caused men to become fused with the ship. “The men on board
On 14 April, four days into the crossing and about 375 miles south of Newfoundland, she hit an iceberg at 11:40 p.m. ship's time. The Titanic made an impact, two hours and 40 minutes later, the boat was lost in the ocean forever. Just like Jack Jill, and Bob Blob. They tried to get on a rescue boat and they were being selfish and wanted to be the first people to get a lifeboat so they knew they would survive and so Tyrone T. lll stayed behind. So then they got on a lifeboat and it ended up sinking/freezing because of how many people were on it. It was the most well known ship for all
One day, while Pierre was staying the night in a hotel in Paris, he received a letter. The letter said that the American government was going to build a frigate to chase down and kill the sea monster. The letter also said that they would be more than happy to have him come along. Pierre and his trustworthy servant, Conseil, we’re going to attend this expedition. They packed up the belongings that were necessary, and then headed out to the dock to meet the ship, named the Abraham Lincoln. He gets aboard the ship, and the crew set sail to kill the monster.
They were also looking in the place it sunk not considering if it moved toward the the direction of the current(jennifer wirth). They have found the titanic and some of the artifacts have been brought up to be in museums all around the world . If they would have been looking for the trail they would have found it sooner. If the titanic is down there much longer the ship will decompose (jennifer wirth). Titanic ologists need to find a way to bring it up before it rots underwater. It will soon rot because the salt and the bacteria in the water . if the titanic was found sooner then maybe it could have been saved but as of right now it will just break apart if they try to lift it out of the
