The movie Southpaw is about a talented boxer named Billy Hope who has a wonderful family, a lot of money, and a lot of fame. Billy is the undefeated champ and is doing everything he can to keep that title. Kurt Sutter, the writer for the movie Southpaw conveys to the audience that you can do something to make a difference so you should never give up on your dreams and that family is everything.
In the beginning of the film, Billy is living the perfect life. He has a beautiful wife Maureen and a daughter, Leila, which he holds close to his heart. He grew up in an orphanage and never really made a lot of money. Billy knows nothing outside of the boxing world. One day, he gets put to the test. Sutter was trying to convey a personal event in his life that we can all relate to. I feel that’s what most writers write about because it’s easy to write about something you know about and can easily relate to. There are many people in the world who have gone through the same struggle and they may feel alone like nobody can understand how that was for them when they were growing up. It’s not a reality to most people so, personally, I couldn’t imagine what it would be like growing up in that type of environment. I come from a loving and caring family and I am very thankful for that. My father grew up in a poor home and had to go through some of the same struggles as Billy, with not being able to do the things he wanted to or having any luxurious things, and like Billy, my dad overcame those obstacles and became very successful.
The audience Sutter was aiming for are the people who are struggling in their life to show them that they can make a difference and overcome the obstacles they are currently facing. During an interview, Sutter told them that the script was originally written for Marshall Mathers, better known as the rapper “Eminem”. Marshall comes from a poor home being raised only by his mother and so he went through some of the same challenges as the character Billy Hope in the movie.
