The Movie Pocahontas Is Not Historically Accurate

The Disney movie Pocahontas is not historically accurate. There are many differences in the plot and characters. A few are that there was no love story between Pocahontas and John Smith, Pocahontas was 12 not 20 when John Smith came, John Smith was not tall and blond, and in the movie, they came to Jamestown in one ship. There are much more ways that the Movie is not historically accurate, but you can already see that it was very different from what actually happened.

In the very beginning of the movie, you can already see two differences. For starters in the movie, John Smith was tall and blond, however, in real life, he was short, red-headed, and had a red bushy beard. You can see in my cover that he looks nothing like the John Smith in the movie. Also, another thing that you notice very early on is that they are only traveling to Jamestown in one ship. When actually they came to Jamestown in three ships: the Godspeed, the Discovery, and the Susan Constant. My cover shows the replicas of the three ships in Virginia.

Another huge difference between the movie and the actual story was that there was no love story between Pocahontas and John Smith.

In the movie, Pocahontas and John Smith actually fall in love even though Pocahontas was going to marry another man. In real life, Pocahontas ends up marrying John Rolfe, yet she is still friends with John Smith. As a matter of fact, Pocahontas still saved John Smith’s life in reality. Disney probably created the fake love story because every Disney movie needs a love

story.

Additionally, Pocahontas is really 12 not 20 when John Smith comes to Jamestown. This makes more sense because they wouldn’t have been in love if she was 12 and John Smith was 28 and like I said before she ends up getting married years later to John Rolfe. We know that she is 20 because she looks much older than a 12-year-old in the movie.

Now you can see how the movie is very different from the reality of what happened. My cover also demonstrates parts of a historically accurate story. Like how John Smith is actually a short, red-headed guy with a red bushy beard and how they came to Jamestown in three boats. However, there are things that are not in my cover, like how there was no love story and Pocahontas was 12, not 20. In the conclusion, we know that the Disney Movie was different than what actually happened back in 1619.
