Hard work is often the key to success. But with today’s generation, the culture of compliments or praises has worked its way into the adult world. Many workers who are working hard valued the compliments and praises given from others than feeling proud of themselves for working hard. In his essay, The Most-Praised Generation Goes to Work, Jeffrey Zaslow states, “A lot of today’s young adults feel insecure if they’re not regularly complimented.” And I agreed with Zaslow even if some of his arguments are questionable. The pressure of the working world, how parent and schools educate their children and students, and the lack of criticism has all but created this insensible world due the great and unimaginable expectation.

That children who are raised in an overpraising environment tend to be narcissist and self-center. And when they are put in an environment where it challenges themselves such as the working world, they fall short on their intellectual potential and skills. Which is why Zaslow stated that “many officeholders are now joining the American’s praise parade to hold on to young workers” (533). Basically, this statement is stated toward the current generation. Unlike the older generation, the current generation thirst after the self-fulfilling treats. Zaslow also stated that the current generation get frustrated for working hard and not getting the praised they work for. In my own thoughts, I said that Zaslow has undervalue the younger generation. Not all children who are raised in the overpraising environment turn out to be the same. I, for example, actually like to be praised for the hard work I do because it make me feel proud of myself. The U.S educational system’s purpose is to control the minds of its students that will be the future leaders of the country. Juveniles are being taught that in order to have a nice car, branded clothes and the house of their dreams, by getting into an expensive mortgage, they have to be an employee of a huge corporation. In addition, they have to undergo to a prestigious school, study hard, have excellent grades in order to become popular and respectable in the world. However, many people would not become those super leaders, but these majorities of people have a great role in the capitalistic society of the US. As Gatto says, “We buy televisions, and then we buy the things we see on the television. We buy computers, and then we buy the things we see on the computer. We buy $150 sneakers whether we need them or not, and when they fall apart too soon we buy another pair” (38).

The differentiating function, which gives to the student a good education and after his or her role is diagnosed, they prevent any educational progress. The selective function, function that the system has used to prevent academic growth for the non-selected students. The propaedeutic function, which works in the selection of specific groups of intellectual adults to keep perpetuating the system all over again making it a continuous sequence. (Gatto 34). Every day in our lives, we desire to be perfect to please others. No matter how hard we try, if we do not achieve the concept of being perfect, then we will feel like failure. For example, every year at the Olympics, a newly crowned Olympic champion receiving a gold medal persuades young athletes to worry about winning a medal in every competition they compete. If they do not win a medal in a certain competition, then all their hopes are vanished for the next competition. This action shows how if we do not strive to emulate other people’s achievements, then we will not stand out from the rest of our population.
This reminder remains in the back of my mind with every move I make. Moreover, I have learned that being humble when you succeed earns you a lot of respect from your peers. I don’t know anyone who likes a person who brags about their success. When you achieve something and another person congratulates you, your reaction should be executed with gratitude. Say “thank you” or compliment them in return. The wrong way to respond would be saying something like “I know.” That is an unattractive way to respond to positivity. They are the millennials. According to Simon Sinek, millennials are a group of young, ambitious and hardworking individuals currently entering the workforce. Many people believe that “having an economy that places a greater value on skills and education is a good thing” and that is the thing that is needed to improve people’s lives and futures (Baicker, Lazear). If what our economy is trying to do a good thing they why are so many students still suffering? The main issues are the low-income education that many students have. Many schools are getting money from the government but that is not enough to pay for everything students need. Educational standards have continued to increase throughout the years but that does not help the students who are unable to pay for the better education. These students who cannot pay for the better education are stuck barely getting by with a low education. A low-education can affect many areas of regular schooling. The students who are at low-income schools do not know what type of disadvantage they have compared to other students across the country. These students believe that they are getting the best education, but there are many students who are getting a better education at a school that has the funds to pay for everything their students need. Low-income students are suffering due to the environment they are in at school and they continue to suffer throughout their life due to it. These students will continue to suffer unless something is done about the low-income schools and improve them for the future. Going to school and getting a great education is important for a successful future in today’s world. Years ago, many children did not go to school and many young adults opted to work instead of attending college. There is a growing amount of changes in the classroom such as technology, teaching time, teaching styles, and freedom of space.
