The Great Pyramid For many years we have seen many different architectural structures come and go. From the pyramids to the Colosseum to the Eiffel Tower to The Twin Towers. Every architectural structure derived from another in some way shape or form. Whether it's from the use of columns or arches or blocks or bricks. Built in about 2550 B.C. by King Khufu it is located on the Giza plateau near the city of Cairo. Khufu's mother Hetepheres I was buried in Giza which is the reason he decided to build his pyramid there. Now there is much speculation as to why the pyramid was built but according to Temples, Tombs, and Hieroglyphs by Barbara Mertz, "it's a royal tomb and nothing else." The pyramid was built with great precision that it cannot be replicated by modern technology. It took 23 years and about 20,000 laborers to build it. It was made of 2.3 million blocks of limestone, each weighing as much as 15 tons. People still speculate on how they laborers got the stones up the structure. Many believe they used some sort of ramp made from either mud or stone itself. Once the pyramid was completed it stood at 481 ft. high and was the world's tallest structure for over 4,000 years. Due to many years of erosion it currently stands at 450 ft. tall. The pyramid changes from pale silver to gold in the sunlight. You can go just about anywhere in the world and find a pyramid but there's one place in particular that will be discussed and that will be the Luxor Hotel and Casino. Luxor, located in Las Vegas, Nevada, is named after the city Luxor (ancient Thebes) in Egypt. It is owned by MGM Resorts International. It is the sixth largest hotel in Las Vegas and the ninth the world. It is similar I size to the Red and the Bent Pyramids of Egypt. It cost $375 million to build and opened on October 15, 1993 with just 2,056 rooms. It featured a King Tutt's Museum and Tomb. Also, the Nile River Tour. It was a river ride that carried guests to different parts of the pyramid. In 2007 the owner renovated most of its public areas removing most of the antient Egyptian theme and making it more adult friendly by adding modern lounges, restaurant and night clubs. It is now 30 stories with 4,407 rooms and a 120,000sq. Ft. Casino. It added the LAX Nightclub which attracts more than 15,000 people a year. In 2010 it was designated as 4 key rating from the Green Key Eco-rating program. At night you can see a beam of light shining from the top of Luxor's hotel.
