The term “homesickness” refers to the functional impairment or the distress, which is precipitated by an anticipated or actual separation from what one is familiar with. Occasionally, homesickness can be severe, and hence, it is viewed in the context of the adjustment disorders by the American Psychiatric Association mode of classification. Specifically, homesickness is characterized by depressed mood and anxiety. One can easily distinguish homesickness from related anxiety disorders due to the unique presentation of recurring thoughts focused on home, namely loved ones, house, homeland, pets, home cooking, and a wish to return home. Homesickness can affect negatively one’s cognition, behavior, emotions, and physical condition to an extent of warranting clinical attention (Thurber and Walton 3). The purpose of writing this paper is to discuss the topic of homesickness as it has had adverse effects on me while at school.
All people who for some reason happen to be far from home experience homesickness, since relocation and tuning to a new place of residence can be stressful, especially where coping strategies and resources may be lacking. This is more common among the youngsters as compared to people who are advanced in age (Shahmohammadi and Irannejad 72). The research that was conducted involving children and adolescents who lived away from home showed that homesickness is associated with depression, anxiety and loneliness. It also revealed that homesickness that is intense can be considered problematic when it worsens existing anxiety and mood disorders, or when it precipitates mental or physical conditions such as appetite change, insomnia (lack of sleep), gastrointestinal upsets, diabetes and even compromising the immune syst...

Being a teenager is not as easy as you think, as you grow older life becomes more complicated and frustrating. Sometimes, you get lost. You don’t know what do, you don’t know who to trust anymore and unsure of the path you wish to embark upon. You find it hard to enjoy the things you once found pleasure in. As time passes by the feeling doesn’t stop and then there will come a point that you’ll discover something terrifying. You’re depressed. The world doesn’t seem as beautiful anymore. You don’t want anybody else to help you. You have become an introvert now. You’ll feel as if you don’t have any worth in this world anymore for days or months at a time. Sometimes the pain feels lighter. It’s because time heals all wounds. I chose this topic because I know a few people with depression and honestly speaking, it’s not easy. I know that this research will be beneficial to many people.

Home is experienced in a multitude of ways using our senses. Impressions of our past and present homes materialize from a familiar smell, sight, feeling, taste or sound. We all live in a multi-sensory environment, where we can use one or more of our senses on a daily basis to absorb our surroundings. However, it is easily arguable that although each sense can conjure up a memory, or imprint a grasp of where we live or lived, certain senses are stronger with the recollection or the feelings we have of our home. If we live in the same home as other people, some of us will associate a certain smell to the home, while others will not; or a sound, etc., that I would not associate with that home.
Studies have shown that many college students are not able to handle the stress while in school, which hinders the ability for the brain to act in a normal way (Shahrokh and Hales, 2003). If a person is unable to deal with the stress that one is being faced with, it will have negative consequences in terms of causing several psychological disorders (Canby et al., 2014). Entering post-secondary education is a completely new environment for students, as it can be tough for many to adjust to the new surroundings. There are many factors that cause stress when students enter college, as it can include having the ability to deal with lower marks (Struthers et al., 2000) and having to create a new social life. Once and if a social life is established, it can cause more stress among students because it can lead into peer pressure that results in risky behavior. In particular, peer pressure can cause alcoholism or drug abuse (Seiffge-Krenke, 1990) or it can also cause unprotected sex. Not only does stress revolve around peer-pressure, but it can also be caused by headaches and lack of energy. If a student is constantly staying up late to finish assignments or to study, it can cause headaches from the lack of sleep; thus causing stress. With all the given factors, it can be hard to overcome these external factors which can ultimately lead to stress among
Adolescent despondency affects the way an individual sleeps, eats, the way they feel about themselves and those around them (“Side Effects of Untreated Depression”). This particular mental disease changes the outlook on a teenager’s view on themselves, loved ones, and their surroundings. Depression can be a responsive action to certain situations, such as emotional trauma, and stress. It can have devastating, and in some cases, life threatening, effects on younger members of society. Due to the fact that normal, unaffected teenagers naturally have fluctuating moods, it is much more difficult to diagnose depression at this age.
An individual becomes comfortable in the society when the essential social support is offered to him or her.
