With the times socially and politically changing, young people saw rules and laws as things to evade and work their ways around them. When the 18th amendment banned the distribution, but not the drinking, of alcohol, older teens stored up drinks in their homes that would be able to last them for years. This outrageous and cunning new way of thinking spread across the country in one of the quickest social developments the United States has ever seen and left older generations speechless. Never before had anyone seen such bold and defiant attitudes in anyone, let alone the youth. These distinguishing characteristics separated this generation as a whole and inspired others to come, laying the foundation for modern thinkers. The advancement of Henry Ford’s model T automobile was changing all aspects of society as it became more affordable. Teens began using them to spend more time with one another and go out of town or to places that would soon become social hang outs. Historians say this is the origin of the transitions that “shattered tradition” (“The Invention of the Teenager”). When surveyed, 47.6% of girls and 45.4% of boys cited the hour they got home or the number of times they went out as the main source of disagreements with their families (“Modern Youth in the 1920’s: Collected Commentary”). This was because cars had made old fashioned courting obsolete and dating became a common practice. The institutions, cultural forms, and economic powers were lifted as the term “teenager” itself was created to differentiate young men and women from adults (University of Toronto 145). The clothing trends, hairstyles, dances and even the language was different from that of adults (Armstrong et al, 134). Young men and women enjoyed dressing themselves with blue jeans, leather jackets,and pony tails for women, which stood as an identity for teenagers as it differentiated them from adults (Armstrong et al,135). Illegal alcohol consumption has been a major problem with high school students around the nation. Lowering the drinking age from twenty one would result in major consequences for America’s adolescents. By lowering the drinking age, alcohol would be more accessible to those who choose to participate in underage drinking. The desire to drink for teens and young adults between the ages of fourteen and twenty can be caused by peer pressure or an act of rebellion. One beer might not seem like a big deal at the time, but it could lead to a life of addiction and alcoholism.
The more people became dependant on the automobile, the more younger citizens felt they should be spending time without their families and more time within each others social grouping. In courtship, many teenagers experienced the radical idea of escaping the constant supervision of their parents using the automobile. They spent more money on entertainment and travels, and to the possibilities of the freedom of the young adults being able to travel wherever they wanted worried many parents. They wanted freedom and excitement and travel helped them easily obtain that objective. This slowly and increasingly broke down the stability of family life. Now it was far easier for individual family members to go their own way whenever they pleased.

A lot of the time, teens think it is ‘cool’ to drink because everyone else does it. Almost every television show that young people watch have some underage substance abuse, leading adolescents to believe that it can’t be that bad. While society plays a big part in this huge problem, both teens and parents need to learn that there can be severe consequences from as little as one drink. With a country in shambles as a result of the Vietnam War, thousands of young men and women took their stand through rallies, protests, and concerts. A large number of young Americans opposed the war; with a common feeling of anti-war, thousands of youths united as one. This new culture of opposition spread like wild fire with alternative lifestyles blossoming, people coming together and reviving their communal efforts, demonstrated in the Woodstock Art and Music festival. College life is filled with changes. It is filled with many new experiences. As college students, we are on our own, adults. As adults we are responsible for keeping up to date on information that affects us. One issue that affects college students nation wide is drinking. The current legal drinking age in the United States is twenty-one years of age. The Federal government raised the legal drinking age from 18 to 21 in 1984. Even with the current drinking age at twenty-one, many people under that age choose to drink anyway. In fact, a government survey from 1996 showed that 56% of high school seniors reported drinking in the last 30 days (Hanson). With so many underage drinkers, many people believe that the drinking age should be lowered, stating that people are going to drink, regardless of the legal age. Still others see the high number of underage drinkers as a sign that the legal age needs to stay where it is and stricter laws need to be implemented. With the extremely high number of underage drinking, we can assume that the current drinking age is relatively ineffective, and therefore we must ask ourselves: should the drinking age be lowered, or should we revise policies to make the current age more effective? World War I had a tremendous influence on this generation.It lasted many years, and by the time it had ended, millions of men had been affected by the horrors of battle, losing a sense of the values their parents had instilled in them. War had forced this generation to grow up quickly, and for those who'd spent years in the trenches, war was all that they really knew. After the soldiers returned home, governments started ignoring their heroes, which caused the veterans to become quickly disillusioned with government. A Single Youth Culture Youth culture and youth subcultures have been a subject of research since the early 1930s.
