An epic is a long narrative poem that tells the exploits of an epic hero. Epics are comprised of an epic hero and an epic battle between good and evil. The earliest known epic today is The Epic of Gilgamesh. This tale is about Gilgamesh’s search for eternal life. Epithets, a description phrase, are also included in epics. Batman, the Dark Knight, is Gotham’s savior when he finally defeats the Joker. Being born into royalty, Gilgamesh is also known as the king of Uruk. “In medias res” is typically how epics start, just like Batman and The Iliad start. Epic heroes. Individuals who are larger than life, brave, and noble are the predecessors to our modern day superheroes. Initially, an epic hero such as Beowulf could be compared to Wonder Woman, a fierce warrior and protector of the Amazons. Both possess titles of nobility, travel over vast settings, and are well-versed fighters, all of which are characteristics of an epic hero. While both individuals are quite similar, there are a few distinctions between the two such as one standing alone in battle, being emotionally connected with their followers, and having a weakness that ultimately leads to their death. For example, Wonder Woman often fights her battles along with her counterparts while Beowulf chooses to battle independently.
The Epic of Gilgamesh has many similarities to The Legend of King Arthur. Although Gilgamesh and King Arthur have comparison they also have differences.
