The Mind, Brain, and Language: Neurology Linguistics As discussed in class, my paper is on Neurology Linguistics, or Neurolinguistics. Since I am a psychology major I wanted to incorporate that into my linguistics class. The term Neurolinguistics came from the founder of the Journal of Neurolinguistics, Harry Whitaker. Neurolinguistics is the branch of linguistics associated with the relationship between the functioning of the brain, structure, and language. It is the study of how neural mechanisms in the brain control the comprehension and production of our brain, and the acquisition of language. To find out where our knowledge of language, such as, speech, writing, reading, and interpreting information is stored in the brain, we need to know parts of the brain. Parts of the brain I will talk about are the right hemisphere, the left hemisphere, and the corpus callosum, which splits the two. The corpus callosum is a nerve fiber and separates the cerebral cortex lobes, which are the left and right hemisphere. Its function is for both hemispheres to communicate

The left hemisphere is responsible for controlling the right side of the body and is the more academic side or “logic” side, dealing with mathematics and science. The left hemisphere, or cortex of your brain is critical for written and spoken language, no matter what language you read or write. Damaging the left hemisphere can cause loss of sensation or become weak/paralysis on the right side of the body. It can also cause you to lose vision in your right eye or both. Since the left side of your brain deals with mathematics and science, it is reasonable that you would have difficulty with understanding numbers and dealing with money. The textbook mentioned how it is possible to live with one side of the brain (Lilienfeld et al., 2016). However, I was still a bit confused on this concept because I have always thought that you need both hemispheres working together to function properly. As I watched the TedTalk, I was further able to change my understanding of the concept that you can live with one hemisphere, you would just lose some functions associated with that hemisphere, as Jill explained (Taylor, 2008). Not only that, but from the textbook I never understood how you would feel without one of your hemispheres not functioning properly, I personally thought that you would lose some abilities and it would be difficult to survive. However, the TedTalk changed this understanding of mine because, like Jill, although she lost some functions, she lost all her stresses, and she felt peace, as she states, “So here I am in this space, and my job, and any stress related to my job - it was gone. And I felt lighter in my body. And imagine all of the relationships in the external world and any stressors related to any of those - they were gone. While reading "Neuromancer", one may become extremely baffled if he or she cannot interpret the terminology used or the framework in which the book is written. Hence, the use of the formalistic approach is necessary in order for the reader to actually understand the concepts trying to be declared by Gibson. Through the formalistic approach one can begin to see that Gibson uses repetition, and specific word choice to set the tone for the novel, and imagery to relate the content of the book to the lives of his readers.
Throughout William Gibson's Neuromancer, the text shows many ways of using the syntactic rhetorical strategy. Within the text, many examples show a break in perception or explain quickly areas that span over a long period of time. For all of these reasons Gibson cleverly uses the syntactic approach to allow his readers the freedom to make their own assumptions and to illustrate his plot in this novel Neuromancer.
In order to understand linguistic intelligence it is important to understand the mechanisms that control speech and language. These mechanisms can be broken down into four major groups: speech generation (talking), speech comprehension (hearing), writing generation (writing), and writing comprehension (reading).
Nowadays, it is widely known that the right and left hemisphere have different functions. The two hemispheres are equally important in a daily life basis. Nevertheless, in the 1960’s this was not common knowledge. Even though today the importance of the brain hemispheres is common knowledge, people don’t usually know to whom attribute this findings. One of the people who contributed to form a more defined picture about the brain hemispheres and their respective functions was Roger Wolcott Sperry, with the split brain research. Roger Sperry did more contributions than the split brain research, but this is his most important and revolutionary research in the psychological field. Thanks to the split brain research, Sperry proved that the two hemispheres of the brain are important, they work together and whatever side of the brain is more capable of doing the task is the hemisphere that takes the lead.
