Some memorable quotes in The Pillars Of The Earth highlight the concept of violence, greed, and contradictory. Monks are known as devoted, true believers of God who do not question his higher power, however, as the story progresses, Prior Philip begins to question his destiny, “He looked up at the sky and shouted angrily: ‘If I can't save anyone, why did you send me here?’” (512). The essence of the story challenges character’s actions, state of mind, and even religion. It has gone to the extent where it has challenged a monk’s belief in a high power and his fate. This is a memorable quote because it reveals what corruption and misfortunes can do to people, which is, question their position. Another memorable quote in the story involves Waleran …show more content…
Bigod, a bishop, speaking to William Hamleigh of his “achievements,” “So you've burned Kingsbridge, ruined your worst enemy, and established a new source of income for yourself. Not a bad day's work” (613). Greed has always been behind a character's action.
Some characters begin to drift away from being true saints to people whose intentions are for selfish reasons. The characters slowly unfold themselves into selfish beings. This is a memorable quote because it is practically the antagonist’s whole intention, to ruin everything that gets in the way of getting what he wants. Greed is his motivation. Within the story, two opposing forces have repeatedly challenged each other, resembling the war of God and the Devil, “So God said: ‘All right. Take it all away from him, and see what happens.’ And that's what Satan did” (723). The whole paragraph in which this quote is mentioned, reflects what has been happening to Philip and the people of Kingsbridge throughout the book. Philip, for example, started off with nothing at first but then God had given him an idea to build a cathedral. Once built, the devil, in this case being William, had destroyed and obliterated the church which had put Philip back to square one but yet his faith in God still stood strong at that time. This is a memorable quote because it demonstrates the constant “war” between two opposing forces in the book. In spite of war and greed, love between the two characters, Jack and Aliena, has also highlighted a memorable quote “She touched his
face. ‘I love you too much to take you away from Kingsbridge Cathedral’” (773). One of the central settings of the story is the fictional town Kingsbridge. The importance of this quote is because love is a dominating emotion that could have broken the bond between some characters and citizens of Kingsbridge, but it only brought people together. Kingsbridge was were the two great lovers had met, Jack and Aliena, despite being under constant attack. Unaware when they would be ambushed again, love has protected the citizens with hope of someday finishing the marvelous cathedral and had built unbreakable bonds that could withstand all the chaos. Lastly, another memorable quote would be every time a song appeared in the story, “At dusk the hunter took his prey, The lark his freedom never. All birds and men are sure to die But songs may live forever” (15). The person singing this song is a young prisoner who is about to be hanged and these are his last words. It was like his lovely voice held death at the last second. Every song sang in this book had a significant purpose, such as, to tell of another’s future. During that time, songs would be seen as curses and associated them with witches. This particular song is memorable because it foreshadows many of the character’s fate and states that “songs may live forever” which is evidently true. The quote refers to the curses his wife, Ellen, had casted upon the characters who had hanged him. The curse follows them throughout the story which result in their downfall.

The book, “The House of the Scorpion” by Nancy Farmer is a 3 time award winner and a fantastic novel in the genre of utopia and dystopia. Matt is a clone saved from the burden of having a blunted intelligence. Evidence from the book supports this was a faulty move. The novel also says why El Patron blunts their intelligence; it's fully out of greed. Overwhelmingly, it seems that these things played a big part in the outcome of the novel, and why Matt is such a interesting, dimensional character in the book.

In the ancient Japanese culture, one great aspect was on how they emphasized on the intrinsic themes of loyalty and honor. They had fierce warriors known as samurai’s. A samurai was a traditional warrior who would protect and be loyal to their masters no matter what. They were known to be skilled soldiers, benevolent men, self-sacrifice, sense of shame, along with other major characteristics that embodied them as a samurai. While this class of warrior no longer exist today, the remembrance of a samurai is present in the minds of the characters in the novel, The Samurai’s Garden by Gail Tsukiyama. Tsukiyama does a fascinating piece of work by really elaborating and describing the great attributes that Matsu possess of a true samurai. In the
Men must face hardships. Men must face disease. Men must face each other [Parallel]. Men constantly pressure one another into perfection. Some men, however, crumble under the burden looming over their heads [FoS]. When some men cannot face themselves or those around them any longer, they choose a dangerous and deadly escape. Many characters throughout the book, the most prevalent being the cynical narrator, Jack Burden, allude to the massive struggle for power that ensues, as well as the inevitable decay thereof among the political giants in All the King’s Men. While Jack gives the pretense of imperviousness, he is sensitive to the signals even as he excuses them. “Doesn’t it all boil down to this? If the government of this state for quite a long time had been doing anything for the folks in it, would Stark…be making so many short cuts to get something done to make up for the time lost all these years in not getting something done?” (125). Jack recognizes that men are corruptible by power, but he justifies this because of the results corruption seems to produce. By the end, however, he comes to better realize that the results are not really auspicious. Power can be used to strive toward worthy goals, and often those goals are achieved to much acclaim, but the end result seldom comes to a positive effect.
Nancy Farmer's intended message in The House of the Scorpion is that your choices are what define you, not your origin. In the beginning of the novel, at El Patrón's party, Matt forces Maria to kiss him. "'I demand a birthday kiss'...'It's my birthday too,' said Matt, 'and I can have anything I want. Isn't that so, mi patrón?'" (109). This quote shows how, at first, Matt thinks that him being the clone of El Patrón means he has to, and should, be like him. He tries to impress him and tries to use the power that El Patrón has. This relates to how many people think where they come from defines them. For example, someone born into a family of criminals may not see the point in trying rise above it. They may not see that they have a choice to be
In the novella of The Crucible by Arthur Miller vengeance is walking Salem in causing several conflicts throughout the Salem village. Many of the conflicts are due with getting back at one another with the need for revenge. “We are what we always were in Salem, but now the little crazy children are jangling keys of the kingdom, and common vengeance writes the law!” (Miller 81). This quote is trying to prove the point the proctor has a very good understanding of what is happening in how the little girls are rebelling and acting out. They are accusing several women of being witches. “Why, Abigail Williams charge her” (Miller 77). The quote is trying to show how many of the girls are calling out the wives in the Salem village.
