The Maze Runner Book Summary The Maze Runner by James Dashner begins when Thomas, the main character, wakes up in the Box and only remembers his name and nothing about his past. The doors of the box open up with a bunch of boys looking down at him and they get a rope to pull him up. Thomas saw that the place was mostly farmland and was surrounded by very high walls. The place was known as the Glade and outside the Glade was the Maze. Everyday the walls of the Glade close to protect Gladers from getting eaten by massive monsters that live in the Maze called Grievers who usually came out at night. This was the strangest thing ever seen by any Glader because only boys appear in the Box and a new person was delivered in the Box every month. She was asleep and in a coma. She opened her eyes for three seconds and said, “Everything is going to change”, and held a paper in her hands saying, “She’s the last one ever.” The Gladers put her in the medical room until she became conscious. Thomas then met a Runner named Minho. Minho was laying on the ground breathing heavily. Thomas thought he was hurt and called Alby. However, when Alby got there, Minho said that he was just excited to find a dead Griever while running the Maze. Alby and Minho decided to take a look at the dead Griever. Unfortunately, when the doors were about to close, Thomas saw that Minho was dragging Alby who had been stung by the “dead” Griever and decided to go out and help him. Right after Thomas went out to offer a hand, the doors closed and he was stuck in the Maze with Alby and Minho. Thomas was able to stay alive during the night along with Minho and Alby. Because of this, Thomas, Alby, and Minho became well known since they became the first ones to live a day in the Maze. This lead to Thomas going to jail which is called the Slammer for one day since he broke the biggest rule in the Glade, never go out to the Maze after the doors closed. However, Minho selected Thomas to be a runner because of his bravery that helped him survive during that …show more content…
The twenty Gladers that survived came face-to-face with the Creators who appeared thin, pale, and joyless adults who look over the Glade behind a piece of glass. One of them congratulated the successful Gladers who found a way out of the Maze. Alongside one of the Creators was a young boy named Gally who was once a Glader. Gally pulled out a knife and decided to throw a knife at Thomas. Chuck jumped right in front of Thomas causing the knife to plunge right through his body. This enraged Thomas so much that he beat Gally to the ground almost killing him. Police officers came, swarming the Creators and then handcuffing them along with Gally. The officers placed the Gladers on a bus to drive them home. During the trip, Thomas was told that the Creators put people into the Maze for something called the Maze trials. The people who were able to escape the Maze were the most intelligent ones. These people were used to save everyone from The Flare. Thomas learned on the bus ride that the world has been ravaged by unknown solar flares and a disease called The Flare. He also found out that the Creators used the Gladers to find people that were intelligent enough to find a way to defeat The Flare and save humanity. And Thomas was one of

Now Thomas from The Maze Runner has to keep moving he doesn’t look back he has to keep on moving forward (or backwards, wherever the maze takes him). Besides Chuck (which was probably his best friend at the time) he left them for
Authors of dystopian literature often write in order to teach their audience about issues in the real world. Dystopian
People do not have to fly to be hero, it takes much more. Many heroes of today are shown to have supernatural powers that makes them acquire amazing abilities, flying, super strength, skills to manifest anything, the list goes on. Our heroes in the present time are perceived by the audiences' mindset to have special powers but there are times where being a hero does not need to have all the extra tricks. Thomas, a character in The Maze Runner is thrown unconsciously with no memory into a place of the unknown called the Glades, consisting of only teenagers inhabiting the area. He would soon find out the whole place is bordered by a big wall that closes by night and day to protect them from the maze that are filled with demonic machines that will kill on sight. This begins his adventure, eager to learn what is out there and willing to become a maze runner which is equivalent to being a tribute for the greater good in their little homemade society. Having powers might help to become a hero, but in the dystopian novel The Maze Runner, by James Dashner, his protagonist Thomas demonstrates the hero journey in a more natural way by crossing the threshold, meeting a mentor, and lastly having tests, allies and enemies.
Meanwhile, “The Scorch Trials” will feature a new adventure for Thomas (Dylan O’Brien), Teresa (Kaya Scodelario) and the rest of the Gladers as they explore a dangerous world after escaping from the large maze. The teenage group will also try to stop the dark plans of the WCKD group while trying to survive in the desolate world.
This bravery eventually allows Thomas to show the Gladers a way out of the Maze. The bravery of putting others first before our own self and setting aside our own needs or well-being for the needs of others is clearly illustrated when Alby sacrifices his own life for the safety of the group. When the Author says "Instead of responding, Alby took off running- he headed straight for the pack of Grievers between him and the cliff."(333). Minho adds, "...He freaking sacrificed himself for us - and they aren't attacking, so maybe it worked. We'd be heartless if we wasted it." (334). Alby sacrifices his life to save everyone else and puts the well-being of others before his own and doing so, he allows the group to successfully escape the Maze. He shows bravery as he does not have any second thoughts on sacrificing himself. Minho also shows that they should not wait and mourn for their leader but to keep going on to find a way to
The chapter starts with a debate between Graff and General Pace. General Pace, chief of the I.F. military police, wants Graff to help defend Ender from Bonzo’s wrath. The novel The Maze Runner by James Dashner begins with a teenage boy waking up in an elevator who has no memory of the past, only that his name is Thomas. When the doors of the elevator open up he is pulled into a humongous square surrounding, called the Glade, by a group of teenage boys. The boys in the Glade refer to themselves as the ‘Gladers’. Thomas learns that the Gladers have lived in there for two years and that the Glade is located in the center of a maze which contains a labyrinth of high walls that move during the night and deadly creatures called grievers. The Glade is led by two boys, Alby and Newt; they both maintain order in the Glade by enforcing strict rules and jobs that keep the Gladers busy. A day after Thomas’ arrival an unknown girl arrives in the Glade. This shocks everyone because the Gladers only receive a new person every month, never within the same week. This also shocks everyone because she was the only girl in a maze full of boys. The girl also gives a message that everything is going to change and that she is the last one ever. Right after her message she immediately falls into a coma. The arrival of the girl causes many things to go chaotic including the sun seizing to rise, the Gladers stop receiving supplies from the creators of the maze, and the doors of the Glade that protect the Gladers from the grievers at night stop closing. When the girl, Teresa wakes up she informs Thomas that they both knew each other in the past and that the maze was a code. Thomas and the people who run around the maze to map out the labyrinth, the runners, look through the archives of the maps and find out the code. Then the leader of the runners, Minho, figures out that the cliff they thought was just a cliff was actua...
No one can put their finger on it, but he is not the same as the others. It appears as the movie progresses that Thomas is an undercover cop of some kind. However, he is unaware because his memory was wiped. As we see how Thomas and the other guys have been brainwashed somehow it strikes the feeling of how people want everyone to be a certain type of person. Catholic schools want their students to look similar in appearance. Many companies want their employees to be dressed the same. No matter how hard people try no one person will be the same as another person is a good lesson that can be seen from The Maze Runner. Also one can see that there are typically two kinds of people. There are those that tend to lead a group and there are those that tend to just follow the person leading. Thomas in the movie is considered the leader because he is trying to get everyone out of the Glade. Gally is considered the follower because he has been there for 3 years and has not attempted to escape. In the modern times there is always a person who is very confident and nine times out of ten that person will be the more successful individual. “Ascensionism… is evident in the… Maze Runner film series.” ("Mythology & Depth Psychology in the 21st Century"). Ascensionism is basically a person who is basically a leader. Like Thomas in The Maze Runner, he starts off the movie as a rookie or a “Greenie” and yet by the end of the
Throughout the book, The Maze Runner by James Dashner, there are many cases where the Gladers could have realized that the world they lived in was fabricated. The Maze was Phase One of the Trials created by WICKED personnel, for the Gladers to solve. From the elevator bringing in random people, the Beetle Blades with cameras and the fact that the sun rise and sets at the same time everyday until the cycle is broken, were sure signs that should have made the Gladers realize it was all an experiment.
