In Alexander Henry’s “The Massacre at Fort Michilimackinac”, he describes how the Indians massacred the soldiers and people at Fort Michilimackinac, he characterizes the Indians in the retelling differently — some as positive and some as negative. In Terry Goldie’s article “Semiotic Control: Native People in Canadian Literature”, Goldie discusses the characterization of Native people using 5 techniques: violence, sexuality, orality, mysticism, and prehistoric-ness — he discusses how these techniques are used to portray Native people in a negative light. In the paragraph where we see Wa’wa’tam for the second time (after twelve months have elapsed), his behaviour is off and he is acting odd— Henry shrugs this off are simply “the peculiarities
of the Indian character” — this ties in with the idea of mysticism of the Native people, how outsiders look upon their behaviours as normal to them and that it is part of the Native mystery. Henry makes a comment about the language that Wa’wa’tam uses, and says that only a master could understand it —although in Goldie’s article orality is used in derogatory terms, here it is used in admiration of the Indians. Violence is often used to show the Natives as animalistic, in Henry’s retelling that shines through — when he is describing the massacre he uses words like slaughter and scalping, these words invoke a sense of fear among the reader.
It is a beautiful day in the area modernly known as southern Mississippi. The birds are chirping, the plants are growing, and the sun is shining. The day starts off like any other in this Native American community. The women began to tend the fields and the men are preparing for the next hunt. Suddenly, many strange figures appear at the entrance of the village. These figures appear to be men but these men are far different from any Native Americans they have seen. In the beginning, these men appear to be friendly and even exchange gifts with the local groups. Not for long these relationships began to change these white men began to disrespect the local chiefs and began to dominate the lands. Interaction of this kind was common along the Native Americans and the European settlers, however, it is not exact with every Native American group.
It seems that in the 21st century and even during the colonizing of America, the interpretation of Native Americans is and had been that they were savages and live a barbaric lifestyle. That they had no order or way of life. When presented with the topic of Native Americans and Colonists in the New World, it is easy to assume warfare and bloodshed amongst the two parties. That the Colonists were constantly in mini battles with the Native Americans. It is also easy to assume that the land in the New World was unsettling to the eyes. Thomas King uses an oral story-telling style of writing mingled with western narrative in his article “You’re Not the Indian I Had in Mind” to explain that Indians are not on the brink of extinction. As a matter of fact, this book examines the evolution of Native Americans throughout American history by explaining the origin of the Indian stereotype, the change from religious justification to scientific racism to a modern anthropological viewpoint of Native Americans, the White portrayal of Native Americans through art, and the policies enacted to keep Native Americans as Whites perceive them to be. The depiction of Native Americans to the current day youth in the United States is a colorful fantasy used to cover up an unwarranted past. Native people are dressed from head to toe in feathers and paint while dancing around fires. They attempt to make good relations with European settlers but were then taken advantage of their “hippie” ways. One of the darkest times in American history was the conflict with the natives. A “war” fought with lies and brute force, the eviction and genocide of Native Americans still remains one of the most controversial topics when the subject of morality comes up. Perhaps one of the most egregious events to come of this atrocity was the Sand Creek Massacre.
