The film adaptation begins with the Ares 3 astronauts on Mars just as an unforeseen sandstorm begins. Watney believes that the crew should wait the storm out, but Commander Lewis disagrees and decides that the crew should leave Mars immediately. When crossing between the MAV and the Hab, a radio antenna strikes Watney, which leads to Ares 3 astronauts to presume Watney death. The music and the emphasis on Watney’s empty seat in the Mars takeoff further illustrate the unavoidable consequences that occurred. This real-time account of the unfortunate events clearly establishes the limited options that the Ares 3 faced. The choice to leave Watney on Mars seems to be the most logical and most favorable outcome for the scenario. While the novel does establish this crucial information of the sequence of the events, the novel reveals this information much later in the plot. Watney has a detailed flashback of the events leading to his abandonment on Mars on Sol 98 (Weir 132-43). After this information becomes known to the readers, readers understand why Watney repeatedly emphasizes that the Ares 3 astronauts are not at
Andy Weir's book, The Martian, is laced with conflict, both external and internal. From the beginning of the book, Weir shocks the reader with the dramatic opening of "I'm pretty screwed." Mark's logs record every event in which nature strives to get the best of him and yet he is able to keep his sense of humor throughout. In one of his logs Mark humorously states " I was just one of her crew. Actually, I was the very

Welcome to the year 2019. In a futuristic world the Tyrell Corporation has given life to replicants, robots that are genetically programmed to be identical to humans. Blade Runner was released in 1982, and was directed by Ridley Scott, who is also well known for directing Alien in 1979. The science fiction thriller stars Harrison Ford and Sean Young. The film was nominated for two Oscars, including Best Visual Effects and Best Art Direction. Blade Runner is a 1982 neo-noir that exemplifies strong storytelling and cinematic techniques. Today, a considerable amount of Blade Runner’s success has been because of its production design, portraying a modified future, and being a dominant film in the neo-noir genre. Harrison Ford plays Rick Deckard, the protagonist of the film. Deckard is a morally unstable retired bounty hunter, also known as “Blade Runner” who hunts illegal replicants. Rachael is an experiment by the Tyrell Corporation to create a more realistic replicant by constructing fake memories to provide a base for emotional responses. Due to the superior artificial replicants being both physically and mentally better than humans the government has calculated they are an insecurity to society. In the year 2019, replicants are illegal and do not have the freedom enjoyed by humans. The specialized “Blade Runner” police unit was brought into being to accurately identify and “retire” or kill replicants.

Although it was created for entertainment purposes, the motion picture can be compared to many different types of individuals and situations. District 9 displays many underlying concepts throughout the movie about racism, prejudice and discrimination. While studying and analyzing the plot and characters, these concepts became more translucent to me, the viewer. This paper will discuss the treatment of District 9 residents and equate their treatment to people with disabilities.

The Odyssey by Homer is a story that has been told countless times over several thousand years with many different versions. O Brother, Where Art Thou? is one of these versions. Even though this movie is considered to be one of the better adaptations of The Odyssey, it has some details that make it undeniably American. The main parts of the story are there, such as the Cyclops, and Odysseus escaping Ogygia, but things such as the Klu Klux Klan (KKK), and the music played throughout the movie make it distinctly American.
