There can be no question that sport and athletes seem to be considered less than worthy subjects for writers of serious fiction, an odd fact considering how deeply ingrained in North American culture sport is, and how obviously and passionately North Americans care about it as participants and spectators. In this society of diverse peoples of greatly varying interests, tastes, and beliefs, no experience is as universal as playing or watching sports, and so it is simply perplexing how little adult fiction is written on the subject, not to mention how lightly regarded that little which is written seems to be. It should all be quite to the contrary; that our fascination and familiarity with sport makes it a most advantageous subject for the skilled writer of fiction is amply demonstrated by Mark Harris.
Along with educational lessons about music and science, Doc also taught Peekay many valuable life lessons. The text states “Doc had taught me the value of being the odd man out: the man who senses that there is an essential collective sanity to humans and who assumes the role of the loner, the thinker, and the searching spirit who calls the privileged and powerful to task” (Courtenay 360). Additionally, Doc also taught Peekay that “mystery, not logic, is what gives us hope and keeps us believing in a force greater than our own insignificance” (Courtenay 348). Both of the quotes contain lessons taught to Peekay by Doc. The first quote talks about the value of not being “normal” and how being the odd one out can be a good thing. The second quote explains the importance of mystery and talks about how sometimes, mystery can be more important than logic. These life lessons taught by Doc were important to Peekay because they gave him advice on different aspects of life, for example, being the odd one out, and helped him progress further in

In the beginning of the story Lupe is determined to find a sport. She has been trying to find one but can’t. Lupe had tried many sports before, but she had not found one. “I wish I could win something anything, even marbles.”
The character is emphasising the moral and educational value of stories in human development and understanding by saying that there is always something to learn from stories, even when they are retold repeatedly.
“ Whatever brings you down, will eventually make you stronger”( Alex Morgan). Alexandra Patricia Morgan was born in Diamond Bar, California on July 2, 1989. When she was a little girl, Alexandra was given the nickname of Alex and (baby horse because she was fast), which was used throughout her whole life (Fishman, Jon 10). Ever since a young age, Alex has been very competitive. For example, when Alex was about three years old, she would sit in the corner playing Monopoly by herself so that she could get better and win when she played against her siblings, even though she didn’t know how to play (Becoming Alex Morgan). With Alex and her competitive attitude, she was very athletic and always wanted to be the best at everything (Becoming Alex Morgan). At around the age of eight, Alex wanted to go to the Olympics one day for the sport of soccer which she began the really progress at (Fishman, Jon 11). At the age of fourteen, Alex got serious about soccer and went from playing AYSO, Recreational soccer meaning it was
When Lupe ran into obstacle after obstacle in her search to learn english, she nearly gave up. Lupe’s story is a great example of being discouraged but proving people wrong because she got discouraged when she was called a retard so she listened to the people who called her that but when her children got called slow she got angry and it motivated her to help prove people wrong that she was smart and her children were too. One time when I got very discouraged was in third grade english class when i wrote a what i thought was a good paper but when I got it back the paper was filled with red ink from the teacher correcting every little thing. This really discouraged me because nobody else had as many corrections on their paper as me this made
One reason why Lupe is so determined is because she is hardworking. She is hardworking because one day after school Lupe left her homework in her backpack and practiced for three hours straight, taking the time to eat a candy bar for energy. She is also hardworking because she decides to do strengthen her wrists by doing twenty push-ups on her fingertips five at a time. “One, two, three …” Even though she
At the beginning, Lupe Medrano beat Alfonso and her brother which they both are pretty good. Also she practiced and got her strength way better and also her accuracy. I know Alfonso is pretty good because that’s what Lupe said and her brother must be pretty good because he too entered the tournament last year. She got her hand stronger by squeezing a rubber eraser one hundred times, To add to that she did twenty push ups on her finger tips just to strengthen her wrist’s. And she got better accuracy just by practicing. Which is part of my theme never give up and practice and you’ll succeed.
“ I did it!” Lupe said under her breath as she won the marble tournament. In the story, “The Marble Champ” by Gary Soto, Lupe the main character is a determined person. She is a hard worker because she gets the job done. she is smart because all the awards she has won, and to top it off with the last reason, she is lonely.
In this movie the protagonist is the whole 2004 De La Salle football team. Some people thought this football team could’ve kept winning forever. This team is the protagonist because you most identify the whole team instead of just one character. One could feel both fear and pity for this football team. One could feel pity because they lost their winning streak on their season opener to Bellevue High School. I felt
To begin with, Lupe is a determined character because she works extra hard. Whenever Lupe has time, she pulls out her marbles and starts practicing. For example, the text states that she ¨left her homework in her backpack and practiced for three hours straight, taking time only to eat a candy bar for energy.¨ Even though Lupe is a straight A student that is practically obsessed with school, she ditched her homework to practice, and was so tenacious, she didn’t even eat dinner. As if this wasn’t enough, Lupe also squeezed an eraser for an entire hour to strengthen her thumb. Her thumb was so sore the next day, she could barely even hold a
Lupe is determined to finally win in a sporting event. My first reason is she was never a athletic person .The story supports this by Lupe saying ” I’ll never be good at sports,” she fumed on one of the rainy days as she lays on her bed
Come then, and let us pass a leisure hour in story-telling, and our story should be the education of our heroes. By all means. And what shall be their education? Can we find a better than the traditional sort?-and this has two divisions, gymnastic for the body, and music for the soul.
