The Many Faces of Pride
Pride is idolatry, boastfulness, and the failure to recognize deficiencies (Peters 87). With time, people have become more accepting of pride in their societies. This progression of acceptance has led to alterations in the definition. It is the slight tweakings of the definition that have allowed us to perceive pride as a deadly sin and simultaneously an essential for success.
The beginning of all sin occurred when Eve listened to the evil snake, in the garden of Eden, who told her that she could acquire God's knowledge (Peters 87). God forbid Eve to eat the apple of knowledge, but she did regardless. Eve committed the first sin of humankind in an act of pride because pride has been defined as "an attempt at human self-divination" (Peters 87). Since she was only the second person to walk the earth, Eve had few examples of how to act. It seems to be that it was her sheer curiosity and amazement with Eden that caused her to eat the apple, not an attempt to become like God. Despite her intentions, according to the ancient definition of pride Eve sinned the first sin of self-divination. Another example of ancient, religious pride can be seen through an ancient Jewish sect, the Pharisees. These men claimed to be the most religious of the land. Although they did not seek to be at the same level as God, they sought answers and results for their village among themselves when they should have been talking to God. Often times, the Pharisees bent the rules of the Ten Commandments for themselves but forced the villagers to strictly obey them. To make matters worse, these men wanted to be rewarded for their good deeds of "helping their community." The Pharisees refused to admit their faults and were condemned "proud" by Jesus (Yancey & Stafford 1125). God gives us a final example that pride is a deadly sin. Lucifer was created to be one of God's right hand cherubs, "the seal of perfection" (Ezekiel 28:12-15). However, one day Lucifer decided that he wanted more knowledge and power than God. When God found out, Lucifer was kicked out of heaven and fell to the earth, bringing one third of the stars (fallen angels) with him (Isaiah 12:12-14 & Revelations 12:4).
Pride is something that is essential in human life. Due to pride, we are able to see the joys
The economies of the North and South were vastly different leading up to the Civil War. Money was equivalent to power in both regions. For the North, the economy was based on industry as they were more modern and self-aware. They realized that industrialization was progress and it could help rid the country of slave labor as it was wrong. The North’s population had a class system but citizens could move within the system, provided they made the money that would allow them to move up in class. The class system was not as rigid as it was in the South. By comparison, the South wanted to hold on to its economic policy. In doing so, the practice of slavery kept the social order firmly in place. The economic factors, social issues and a growing animosity between the two regions helped to induce the Civil War.
Pride frequently has terrible results. For example, as a result of Brothers pride, he left Doodle in the storm. Brother did this because he is angry that Doodle failed, and that his dream of having an “ordinary brother” is over. Doodle realizes that he failed his brother, and feels useless. In addition, after being left in the downpour, Doodle dies. At the point when Brother discovers Doodle dead, he thinks it’s his fault that Doodle dies because he pushed him too hard. After this happens, their family feels like they should’ve been more protective and love Doodle more. In conclusion, while pride can have devastating effects, it can also result in fulfillment.
The North was known for being industrial due to the numerous big cities, perfect for factories. According to Benjamin T. Arrington and the National Park Service, “By 1860, 90 percent of the nation 's manufacturing output
Later, these conflicting results between the North and the South had shortly begun the Civil War. These arising conflicts were similar to the Nullification Crisis during Andrew Jackson’s presidency in 1832. During this time period, South Carolina had nullified the Tariff of Abominations because they had believed it was unconstitutional. John C. Calhoun, vice president of the state, had argued that the national legislation had operated unequally and lacked fairness to every state. Calhoun had also argued for slavery and claimed that it played a part with states’ rights. The Nullification Crisis was just the beginning of the predicaments of the oncoming Civil War.
What is the effect of having too much pride? Can different forms of pride such as familial and social have different consequences? Pride is usually considered to be a positive aspect in one’s life, but too much of it can have adverse results. By observing today’s society, as well as Shakespearean society, it is clear that too much pride in any form can inhibit the ability to accept differences in people and oneself.
Even though pride can be a good thing at times, it is hurtful, it is an emotion that can make or break someone.
Will is a genius of unprecedented standards, but is never discovered until a MIT professor, Gerald Lambeau (Stellen Skarsgard) sees Hunting, who is a janitor, solve a complicated math equation that had taken him, a Fields Medal winner, over two years to solve. Hunting solved it on a single night.

When Lambeau is made aware of the solved problem the next weekend and addresses his class the following week, no one steps forward to claim their work; Soon after, another problem is posted to help identify the genius and Lambeau catches
Pride is defined as “a feeling that you respect yourself and deserve to be respected by other people.” It is also defined as “a feeling that you are better than other people.” These definitions rings true for the obstacles the characters face in both Much Ado About Nothing and Pride and Prejudice. When it comes to pride, when do we know that we have too much? A perfect example of having too much pride lies in the Greek tragedy, Antigone. In my opinion, it is the perfect example because the main character, Creon, is dealing with all the things that are happening because of Antigone’s decision to go against his law and many people are telling him that he is wrong, but he is too confident in his own choice that nothing bad will happen.
When we say pride and self-respect have a fine line of differentiation then I mean, if pride is honorable, then it is not pride but self-respect. It does not ruin the person, if stays within the ego. If pride exits without the feeling of superiority or if pride allows respect towards the other person’s self respect then pride is allowing the person to be open to new things. Therefore pride is not pride actually but it is self-respect.
The word pride in itself isn’t an important word but it’s meaning implies many things. There are several different definitions for pride.
