The Man Behind the Mask in Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe The aspects of similarity and difference to today's world, in the novel Things Fall Apart, by Chinua Achebe, are fascinating to observe; the cultural beliefs and pressures of a society are very much like today's media's effect on many teenagers and young girls. The story is a journey through the life of a man whose influential past causes him to struggle in building his own future. Okonkwo's father affects his current life and causes him to struggle with certain issues in many ways, for instance Okonkwo tries to be the exact opposite of his father, personality wise and Okonkwo's main solution to this is violence, mostly towards his family. However, Okonkwo's culture helps shape his personality as well. Yet the ending to his life is not as fulfilling as he had hoped for. Achebe's message or lesson is for every person to create their own future and not let past experiences hold them down. Throughout the novel there is a thin line between the pressures of a social order and the still existent need to be a human with emotions and feelings. The significance of the story is to learn how to deal with these emotions of anger and stress that are being thrown at a person, while still trying to keep individuality and independent choice making. Okonkwo's broken childhood and lack of fatherly example affects his current life and how he confronts issues in several ways. He has a compulsive need to stand by and be everything his father is not. Their beliefs are completely opposite each other because of Okonkwo's need to fulfill his own pressures and ideal image, which he burdens himself with. Certain characteristics he holds which his father does not is seriousness, determination, and brutality. Okonkwo cannot move on from his past, instead he forces his future to be effected by his past, which results in his emotional separation from others around him. Oknonkwo describes his father as "lazy, improvident and quite incapable of thinking about tomorrow.
