It’s eight o’clock in the morning and you’re about to head out for your walk to school. You pass his house just like every other day. It’s ten o’clock on a Sunday and you walk past him in the grocery store. It’s seven o’clock and you’re sitting at the dinner table eating with your family as you talk to them about your day. He’s two hundred feet away in his basement cleaning up the mess he made after killing his latest victim. Serial killers live among us without anyone knowing until it’s too late. In The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, a serial killer named George Harvey killed a fourteen-year-old girl in the middle of a cornfield. As the book shows, serial killers can be anywhere, living among anyone. Serial killers are commonly known as an antisocial group of people who have common traits with one another; in addition, they have a variety of issues related to their past and their mental health and often have very specific reasons for killing. Serial killers often have very similar traits to one another. They are classified in a specific way to fit into their own group of killers. One or more people have to kill at least one person throughout multiple events with a “cooling off” period in between the events (Ioana 1). These traits fit the description of Mr. Harvey from The Lovely Bones. He killed at least seven girls in total and had years in between each of his victims. In addition to the criteria of a serial killer, they also usually have a personality disorder in common. This personality disorder is known as psychopathy. According to The Association For Psychological Science, psychopathy is a complicated condition made up of multiple personality traits showing different amounts of disinhibition, boldness, and meanness (“Psychopathy: A Misunderstood Personality
