In storytelling, there is always conflict. Conflict between characters, nature, technology, and society, to name a few. In The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, a small town celebrates an annual event called the Lottery. The man in the house draws slips from a box to represent their family. Once a winner is declared, the family individual picks, and once the winner chooses the paper with a black dot, they are killed by the community with stones. The conflict of man vs society is a prevalent theme in this story, affecting both the theme and the characters. When someone goes against the social norms they're living in, it's called man vs society. Popular media examples of the conflict are The Hunger Games, Divergent, and The Giver. Like the character Tessie, when her family was chosen, she condemned the tradition and tried to rebel. This pushes the story further by seeing the conflict and how the others in the community react. Throughout the story, the characters are impacted by the Lottery in different ways. There's Mrs. Hutchinson, also called Tessie, who screams about the injustice of the event while she's being killed. There's the way the rest of the community acts with obedience and partaking in an event that could kill them. There's also the familiarity with it and the way it's treated. The town treats the Lottery like any other event. An event that leads to the townspeople stoning someone to death should be treated the same as the school dance. "Mr.Summers spoke frequently to the villagers about making a new box, but no one liked to upset even as much tradition as was represented by the black box."
