How was the lottery played? The lottery was played with a black box that had a paper slips of names of the people who were playing from each family. The “major” was in charge of the lottery and the people will pull out paper slips of names that were in the box. June 27th, 1948, A summer day of every year. People gather around the village to be apart of the lottery. Mr.Summers, married man with no kids and a wife that’s scold, is in charge of the lottery. During the story there’s conflict of how some villagers didn't find fair of how the raffle was done at first. Shirley Jackson born in San Francisco in December 14, 1916. She started poetry and short stories when she was a teenager. In 1948 “The Lottery,” was published. The short story was published in dozens of languages, and is required reading in U.S. high schools. The lottery is probably the most well-known short story of the 20th Century. Having the black box is part of the tradition. The whole village is included for the raffle. “There were the list to make up- of heads of families, heads of households in each family, members of each household in each family” (Jackson 2). Mr.Summers announces who will draw for their families to the village. “ Clyde Dunbar”, he said. “That’s right. He’s broke his leg, hasn’t he? Who’s drawing for him?” (Jackson 3). Mr.Summers doesn’t really let woman draw so he asks if they have any kids who can draw instead. “ Me. I guess,” A woman said and Mr.Summers turned to look at her. Wife draws for her husband.” Mr. Summers said. “Don’t you have a grown boy to do it for you, Jenny?” (Jackson 3).
