The Short stories “The Lottery” and “The Most Dangerous Game” have similarities and differences in multiple areas throughout the stories. The Purposes of each of the stories is different along with the styles, while the themes are the same for both stories. In the short stories “The Lottery” and “The Most Dangerous Game,” they compare and contrast each other in the ways of the purpose, the theme, and the style and point of view. Although these two stories have similarities they also have differences. These stories have two different purposes. In the short story “The Lottery” the author writes about how it is hard to veer away from tradition. The styles are different for both the stories with the point of view also being different. The style of “The Lottery” is written in the way that the people in the story actually spoke. An example of this in “The Lottery” is when Jack speaks up to the crowd and says, “I’m drawing for m’mother and me” (Jackson 223). The style of “The Most Dangerous Game” is differentiated between old and new English. In the first couple of paragraphs of the story the author has the characters talking in Old English, but as the story goes on the author has the character’s switch to New English. An example of the old English would be when Rainsoford says, “Nor four yards” (Connell 1). Not only is the style of writing different, the point of views from which the stories are told are different too. The Point of view in the story “The Lottery” is not coming from a certain reader, but the narrator. While the point of view in “The Most Dangerous Game” is from Sanger Rainsford’s view. Rainsford is the person who is telling the story instead of the narrator. There are multiple other parts to the style and point of view that compare and contrast, but these are just a few of
