Three dimensional art is defined as media which “occupies space, defined through the dimensions of height, width and depth” (SAYLOR). These art works can be geometric or organic in nature (NORTON). Three dimensional art forms include sculptures, crafts and architecture. Three dimensional art form is fascinating to me because of the amount of realism and beauty it embodies, as well as for its functional and aesthetic value. For this assignment, I chose two beautiful pieces that illustrated the characteristic of three dimensional art and the processes it took to produce them. The first art work I want to analyze is a sculpture done by an Iraqi artist from Kalhu (modern day Nimrud) entitled, “Assurnasirpal II Killing Lions” (Sayre, 420).
Benjamin Percy uses the title “Me vs Animals” for a specific purpose and chose each word carefully. With only three words, the title conveys competition and comparison, gives the reader a connection to the essay, and instills a fear of the unknown. A title can make or break an entire piece of work. I think Percy contemplated over this title and chose three words that would accurately sum up his whole essay, with success. I would like to learn from this how to create a title that does just that.
The artwork starts outside the barn. The left bottom of the painting holds a brown and white pig walking towards the barn in front of the resting dog lying just inside the barn’s open double doors. The pig’s ears are brown while its engorged nipples suggest it had piglets. As the pig strolls in front of the barn it encounters the remains of animal bones while patches of green grass and dirt highlight the way to the barn. On the opposite side of the pig, stands a reddish brown horse. The horse 's mane and tail are black. Its hind legs are white. The tip of the horse’s nose is white. The horse wears a saddle, bridle, halter, bit and reins. Its left hind leg rises as if ready to bolt. In the bottom right hand corner below the horse reads, “G.H. Durrie 1853.” While the area in front of the barn appears sparse, it is the barn and what occurs inside that is where the action
The Maus series of books tell a very powerful story about one man’s experience in the Holocaust. They do not tell the story in the conventional novel fashion. Instead, the books take on an approach that uses comic windows as a method of conveying the story. One of the most controversial aspects of this method was the use of animals to portray different races of people. The use of animals as human races shows the reader the ideas of the Holocaust a lot more forcefully than simply using humans as the characters.
Although the movie The Lion King is often times viewed as nothing more than a child-based movie, in actuality, it contains a much deeper meaning. It is a movie that not only displays the hardships of maturation, and the perplexities associated with growing, but it is also a movie that deals with the search for one's identity and responsibility. As said by director Julie Taymor, "In addition to being a tale about a boy's personal growth, the `Lion King' dramatizes the ritual of the `Circle of Life'." Throughout The Lion King, Simba must endeavor through the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth to take his place in the circle of life, as king of the pridelands.
In “The Secret Lion,” Alberto Alvaro Rios establishes the theme as loss of innocence in a young boy. The narrator brings to life a boy who must leave behind his youthful perceptions about girls, the arroyo, and his green haven. All preconceptions are shattered, and each glimpse of bliss is taken away. Through this the boy gains perspective, and begins to see the world with a new awareness. Rios ingrains the loss of innocence theme through the eyes of a twelve-year-old boy who exhibits maturity, autonomy, and disillusionment.
In the 2016 drama, Lion, directed by Garth Davis, the themes of belonging, identity and cultural heritage are depicted through various film elements. Lion is a true story based on a young Indian boy named Saroo, who, one evening wandered off on a empty train and ends up more than 1500 miles away from home, separated from his family for more than 25 years. He eventually attempts to find his way back home to his birth mother.
As you can see, it is full of animal imagery. My friends, we do not usually have so many animal references in our works of art, so let me explain them. The bears are symbols of their animal or animal-human ancestors (Cothren & Stokstad, 2011, p.849). It symbolizes the power and presence of the ancestral figures. Emerging from behind this partition also gave the owner great power. Notice the beautiful colors and numerous animals on this partition.
Growing up is unavoidable. No matter how much one tries to hold on to it its inevitable in one way or another we all grow up and mature. The elements used to support this idea are many different ones. The theme for "The Secret Lion” is loss of innocence or childhood; basically the main idea is growing up. This is the case with Alberto Alvaro Rios’s “The Secret Lion.” The whole story revolves around the twelve year old narrator whose name is unknown. But what we do know is that the character is going through changes that he doesn’t quite understand and it takes some time to assimilate.
This piece is acrylic, oilstick, and spray paint on wood panel that is 186.1 centimeters in height and 125.1 centimeters in width. This piece features a human-like figure in the center that is mostly half red and half black. This figure has a gray head with one yellow eye and one light gray eye and above its head is a black halo. The background consists of patches of various colors such as light blue, black, dark red, light green, beige, turquoise, pink, and yellow. On the bottle left corner there is a figure drawn that looks like a fish and has a strip of mustard yellow painted through it. Also towards the bottom right of the artwork, there is some drawn on letters that almost look like words but are messily painted over with a desert sand color. This piece is my favorite because I find it aesthetically pleasing. There is a lot going on in this piece that makes looking at it genuinely interesting. The colors that Basquiat choses for the background go very well together and overall compliment the figure in the center. I like how incredibly expressive this piece is and it makes me want to buy a canvas and start painting that I desire. I also like how the human-like figure is drawn. One could see what looks like an outlined ribcage on the figure, which makes me believe that the head is actually a skull. Upon further research I learned that Basquiat was
The figures, both seated and standing are depicted according to traditional Egyptian conventions. Nebamun is painted as the largest figure in the painting because he is the most significant . He is standing in perfect balance with a youthful, well proportioned and defined body. The artist has painted Nebamun in a way that emphasises what the Egyptians believed to be the most important parts of a man’s body. Teeter expands upon this.
It is amazing how a seemingly educated woman that has won Oscar awards for her documentaries, could possibly be so far off base in her review of the Disney movie “The Lion King”. Margaret Lazarus has taken a movie made for the entertainment of children and turned it into something that is racist, sexist and stereotypes gender roles. She uses many personal arguments to review the movie but offers few solutions. The author is well organized but she lacks alternate points of view and does not use adequate sources. Lazarus utilizes the statement at the end of her review that “the Disney Magic entranced her children, but they and millions of other children were given hidden messages that could only do them and us harm” (118). She makes her point by saying that “the Disney Magic reinforces and reproduces bigoted and stereotyped views of minorities and women in our society” (Lazarus 117). She makes comparisons such as elephant graveyards are like ghettos (Lazarus 118). Other lines of reasoning Lazarus gives us are about Whoopie Goldberg using inner city dialect, the villain Scar being gay, and only those born to privilege can bring about change (118).
As I turned away from The Doll Man I immediately was taken in by this self -portrait. Although, the lighting was not very well. It was placed between the tow entrances into the Gioconda and Joseph King Gallery. The painting measured approximately at 4 ft. by 10 ft. The painting is representational and depicts animals and human. The bright red colors and dark features in the background made it stand out. Stopped time, implied space, and texture were also important elements of this painting. As the girl is sitting on the chair with a gaze in her eyes, the gorilla standing behind the chair with a look of concern and uncertainty in its eyes. It doesn’t want to step up in front of the chair and show it’s self completely. There is something to hide. It represents what is actually felt, the truth. Whatever it is, it is not to be revealed. The wolf standing by the girl’s feet has a particular look and is a loner; doesn’t want anyone to get too close. The wolf is there to ensure the hidden, the gorilla, doesn’t show it’s self.
In fact, the history of the portrayal of the animal could be traced back to prehistoric time when people were still residing in caves and hunting animals like horses, reindeers for the food. Hunting was an indispensable part of their daily life because animals were the primary source of food and tools. That’s the reason why hunting was considered as one of the most popular themes in prehistoric art. As early as 3,000 B.C., a rock art from Uruk that demonstrates the king killing a lion using ancient weapons was already created. Later, around 700s and 600s B.C., a series of sculpture which has the similar theme was identified in the palace of Ashurbanipal. Every element of the carving signifies the message of strength and motion (Animals in Art). As we could observe from the ancient art, human beings have been closely bonded with the nature and animals since prehistoric time. While all other animals rendered within the registers are in profile, the head of the panther is oriented in such a way to show a full-frontal view of its face. This orientation allows the panthers to almost make eye-contact with its viewer, possibly to suggest a feeling of mystique.
