Ever since Amy Poehler was a little girl, she loved being the center of attention. Amy was born on September 16, 1971, in Newton, Massachusetts. Amy’s parents knew from the start she wasn’t going to want a normal career. I got all of my interesting facts from Amy Poehler by Justine Ciovacco. At the age of five, Amy and her family moved to Burlington, Massachusetts (12). According to Amy’s parents, she was always feisty, confident, and a natural “activity nerd” who loved being with her friends. When Amy was ten, with the help of her strong confidence, she was Dorothy in her play The Wizard of Oz at Wildwood Elementary School. Amy recalls that role as when she first learned of improvisational acting. Carol Burnett was one of Amy’s biggest inspirations. …show more content…
The college had a group called My Mother’s Fleabag, they put on performances of improvisational comedy, according to Ciovacco (20). They made jokes, everyone was included, and ideas came up on the spot. Amy loved watching My Mother’s Fleabag and talked to one of the members. Kara McNamara motivated Amy to audition for the group (Ciovacco 20). Amy got into the group and performed with them. The group was always rehearsing and acting out sketches. McNamara and Amy became really good friends and they decided to move off campus into a house together. In 1993 Amy graduated college, and she moved to Chicago to start on her improv skills. Ciovacco claims Chicago is a major training ground for comedians (27). Amy started improv classes, where she would act out scenes, and study the forms of improv with songs, games, etc. According to Ciovacco, She still wanted to be on stage more than anything. Amy joined a group called ImprovOlympics (25). The group put on thirty-minute shows and it was usually at midnight. Amy said she learned a lot about herself when performing because she was put on the spot in front of an audience. Ciovacco mentions Amy found herself being sexual, and physical. She even turned into a desperate person wanting to make a joke at times, and even turning into a shy person

Vanitas paintings are two dimensional compositions of symbolic content and iconography. The various objects used in the design of these paintings symbolize the brevity of life, the vanity of wealth and beauty, and the inescapable reality of death. This form of art was developed out of Northern Europe in the mid-16th century and through the 17th century. The word “vanitas” is Latin for “vanity.” Vanitas paintings are designed to remind its viewers of the verse in the Biblical book of Ecclesiastes that says all earthly things are “vanity of vanities, all is vanity.” Artists who painted vanitas wanted their viewers to remember that the wealth, beauty, and achievements that people desire and obtain will pass away and that death is a sure thing. Mortality is the message present in each vanitas painting and each artist expresses this meaning individually with the use of iconography, color, and various techniques.
There are many policy issues that affect families in today’s society. Hunger is a hidden epidemic and one major issue that American’s still face. It is hard to believe that in this vast, ever growing country, families are still starving. As stated in the book Growing Up Empty, hunger is running wild through urban, rural, and even suburban communities. This paper will explore the differing perspectives of the concerned camp, sanguine camp, and impatient camp. In addition, each camps view, policy agenda, and values that underlie their argument on hunger will be discussed.
Amy Tan, in ?Mother Tongue,? Does an excellent job at fully explaining her self through many different ways. It?s not hard to see the compassion and love she has for her mother and for her work. I do feel that her mother could have improved the situation of parents and children switching rolls, but she did the best she could, especially given the circumstances she was under. All in all, Amy just really wanted to be respected by her critics and given the chance to prove who she is. Her time came, and she successfully accomplished her goals. The only person who really means something to her is her mother, and her mother?s reaction to her first finished work will always stay with her, ?so easy to read? (39).
Human; relating to or having characteristics of a person(Merriam-Webster). A human is truly just a soul combined with characteristics of other people, and this is proven by Jenna Fox; the main character in The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary Pearson. After finding out what her body is made up of, Jenna along with other characters think she is not human. Despite this Jenna Fox has always had the key elements it takes to be a human been. Jenna for one has a past and memories that make up her life even after the accident. More importantly it is unfair to call her a “monster” when she shows characteristics similar to that of other humans. Needless to say, Jenna just as any other human isn’t perfect, and she later learns that in order to be one hundred percent human she must have the same chances of succeeding in life as any other human would. Jenna Fox is human because she has a soul regardless of her differences.
Joan River’s was born on June 8, 1933 in her hometown of Brooklyn, New York. From a very young age, Joan was fascinated with acting. Rivers performed in every school play and was involved in theater where she attended Barnard college. After college, she worked as a comedian to get herself out there, but her main goal was to be an actress. In a way, being a comedian was her way of acting the part, much like an actress would do. Along the way, Joan married a producer by the name of Edgar Rosenberg. The couple had a daughter named Melissa Rivers. Joan Rivers stated that the marriage was a good one, for they supported similar goals and worked together on projects. Joan Rivers first big break came from being on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.
Amy Van Dorn is a girl with Cerebral Palsy, meaning she has to use a walker and a Pathway in order to speak. Amy is way above average when it comes to intelligence and is definitely aware of the way people see her. To me, i thought that her character was very compelling, because she is not the typical heroine that you read about in every other story. But she is still just as astounding. I also enjoyed how wasn’t afraid to approach people and talk to them even if she knew that they didn’t want to. Especially because not everyone would be willing to just throw themselves out there like she did considering her circumstances.
One of the central themes in writing of the second generation Asian Americans is the search of identity and individual acceptance in American society. In the last few decades, many Asian Americans have entered a time of increased awareness of their racial and cultural identity built on their need to establish their unique American identity. In the book The Joy Luck Club, which revolves around four mother-daughter Asian American families whose mothers migrated from China to America and raised their daughters as Americans, we see the cultural struggle and differences by looking at their marriages, suffering and sacrifice, and their use of language in the novel.
In the short story, "Two Kinds" by Amy Tan, a Chinese mother and daughter are at odds with each other. The mother pushes her daughter to become a prodigy, while the daughter (like most children with immigrant parents) seeks to find herself in a world that demands her Americanization. This is the theme of the story, conflicting values. In a society that values individuality, the daughter sought to be an individual, while her mother demanded she do what was suggested. This is a conflict within itself. The daughter must deal with an internal and external conflict. Internally, she struggles to find herself. Externally, she struggles with the burden of failing to meet her mother’s expectations. Being a first-generation Asian American, I have faced the same issues that the daughter has been through in the story.
Rachel Carson was born in 1907 in Springdale, Pennsylvania during the height of the Industrial Age (Griswold 8). Her mother, Maria Carson, was an avid bird-watcher and
This is a great story Ten Big Ones by Janet Evanovich has everything you would ever want in a novel. When first just touching the novel my eyes were singed by the title and short summary. In short words I assumed that I would utterly despise the book. As I read the book it became more than enjoyable with the non-subtle sexual references, cursing, and violence. Ten Big Ones, Ten Grand, Ten Thousand Buck is what you could win as the hero at the end of the story. The theme is gang related crime will indubitably fall. The star of the novel is Stephanie Plum, resident of Trenton, NJ. She is a bounty hunter not armature but also not professional. She is deciding on lunch at the deli or sub shop, while at the shop Plum and her partner slash file clerk, they see the infamous Red Devil robbing a deli mart and attempting to throw an alcohol bomb. Plum goes near halfway though book looking for him until she finds out that there is a hit on her. The hit is not for money but for power for the Junkman originally based in LA but has moved to Trenton to take a place of power in Slayer one of the two top gangs in the city. Her: over protective, off and on boy friend does everything he can to keep. Throughout the book while Plum hunted for the Devil and she was also hunted, Stephanie took her grandmother and Lula the file clerk to pick up people like Sally a drag queen, performer, government worker. Sally became a more important character than thought after. He’s stays to plan her sister wedding, but he is the hero after pushing through with his school bus and Uzi killing a large amount of Slayer.
"A Woman’s Place", the name of the commencement speech given by Naomi Wolf at the Scripps College graduation in 1992; contrasts the independent and the dependent woman. In today’s society, there are two different types of women: the woman who has a good head on her shoulders and knows where she is going in the world, and the woman who seeks dependence within the masculine world. Just as they were thirty years ago, women are still not considered to be equal to men. They are more or less looked at as being second to men.
