The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow
Ichabod Crane was a school master in a small town called Sleepy
Hollow. He was greatly amazed by the tale of a ghost called ' The headless Horseman';. It was a ghost that roamed the small valley of
Sleepy Hollow. Then one dark night Ichabod was chased through the woods by the Headless Horse Man. He mysteriously disappeared.
Long ago there was a town called Greenburgh or some called it
Tarry Town. Not far from that village lied a valley called Sleepy Hollow.
A quiet place it was. The land had something that anyone that went there felt drowsy. Some said that the place was bewitched by a High
German doctor during the early days of settlement.
The spirit that was said roamed this land was a figure on a horse back, without a head. It was said to be the ghost of a Hessian trooper.
His head had been carried away by a cannon ball in some revolutionary war. The body of that trooper was buried in a church yard. During the night the ghost rides in search of his head at blasted speed to get back to the church yard before day break. The ghost is known as the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow.
Ichabod Crane stayed in the village of Sleepy Hollow for only one purpose and that was to teach the children of the area. Ichabod was a native of Connecticut. In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus is an ideal father, who sets a great example for his kids. Furthermore, as Miss Maudie talks to Scout, she states “Atticus Finch is the same in his house as he is on the public streets” (Lee, 46). Miss Maudie knows about Atticus’ personality quite well. Miss Maudie explains to Scout Atticus is a man with moral principles, he does what he believes is right even if others are not there to praise him. Through Atticus’ exemplary role, Scout understands the importance of integrity, and strong moral values. Finally, when Scout questions her father about the possible outcome of the trial, Atticus states “simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us to try to win” (Lee, 76). The late nineteenth century was hard on the average American worker, especially farmers. Droughts, tariffs and deflation forced farmers in an economic depression. They relied on railroads to transport their goods to the north, so the railroad companies took advantage of this and raised the prices. Not only that, but the government put high taxes and tariffs on their products. Farmers lost money. Frank Baum struggled too; The Wizard of Oz was his way of escaping the dark times. He wanted to produce happier fairy tale and make a new genre for children and young adults; writing The Wizard of Oz was his way of doing so. Baum wrote the novel during a time called the Populist Movement and many believe this influenced the plot. In a short time The Wizard of Oz flew off the shelves and spread quickly throughout America. The Library of Congress, the official library of the United States, recognized his achievement and that is why for years the novel has been selected for “The Books That Shaped America”, a list of books selected across the country by the Library of Congress. Frank Baum captured the hearts of the young and the old with The Wizard of Oz, yet what was supposed to be the new “sweet fairytale” turned into a controversial political scandal, making it an immensely popular, inspiring writers and young literature enthusiasts to produce similar works.
Jack and the Beanstalk is an original 1807 fantasy story. This story was first mentioned in a British folktale written by Benjamin Tabart called “Jack Spriggins and the Enchanted Bean”. This story was about a young boy who's family was extremely poor. One morning his mom told him to take there cow to the market to get some money for food. On his way jack met a man with what he said were magical beans. Jack was intrigued by these “magical” beans, so he gave the cow away in trade for the beans. When Jack comes home with no money, and just three beans his mom is extremely angry. She snatches the beans and tosses them out the window. The next morning there is a ginormous beanstalks outside there house. Jack is said to have climbed the beanstalk high into the clouds. In the first opening scene, Snow White is referred to as a “lovely little princess.” In her first appearance, she is cleaning and looks as though she is in despair waiting to be saved. Snow White is portrayed as young, virginal, pretty, obedient and incapable of helping herself. This movie having been released in 1937, conveys what the “proper” gender roles of the time were. In Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, power is segregated between genders and even to this day, the stereotypical gender roles seen in this movie still hold some weight in our society.
Being invited to a friend’s house the other day, I began to get excited about the journey through the woods to their cabin. The cabin, nestled back in the woods overlooking a pond, is something that you would dream about. There is a winding trail that takes you back in the woods were their cabin sits.
