Selena was born on April 16, 1971 and died of a gunshot wound on March 31, 1995. Furthermore, in the 1980s, Selena was often criticized and was refused bookings at venues across Texas for performing Tejano music—a male-dominated music genre. However, her popularity grew after she won the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987, which she won nine consecutive times. Pérez and Selena hid their relationship, fearing Quintanilla, Jr. would try to break it up. Selena's sister Suzette, found Selena and Pérez flirting with each other and immediately informed their father. Quintanilla, Jr. took Pérez off the bus and told him his relationship with Selena was over. Selena and Pérez continued their relationship despite Quintanilla, Jr's disapproval; yet Quintanilla, Jr. saw Selena and Pérez romantically together again on the bus after he informed them of his disapproval once more; he pulled over and an argument between Quintanilla, Jr. and Selena ensued. After his dismissal, Pérez and Selena secretly continued their relationship. On the morning of April 2, 1992, Selena and Pérez decided to elope, believing Quintanilla, Jr. would never approve of their relationship. Quintanilla, Jr. later approached Pérez, apologized, accepted the marriage, and took Pérez back into the band. Aside from music, in 1994 Selena began designing and manufacturing a line of clothing; she opened two boutiques called Selena Etc., one in Corpus Christi and the other in San Antonio. Both were equipped with in-house beauty salons. She was in negotiations to open more stores in Monterrey, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. Yolanda Saldívar, managed both boutiques after the Quintanilla family were impressed with the way she managed the fan club. The Quintanilla family appointed Saldívar, as manager of Selena's boutiques in early 1994. Eight months later, Selena signed Saldívar as her registered agent in San Antonio, Texas. After the agreement, Saldívar moved from San Antonio to Corpus Christi to be closer to Selena. In December 1994, the boutiques began to suffer after the number of staff for both stores had decreased. According to staff members, Saldívar often dismissed employees she personally disliked. Employees at the stores regularly complained about Saldívar's behavior to Selena, who dismissed the claims, believing Saldívar would not negatively impose

Selena, “Le Reina de Tejano”, was born on April 16, 1971, in Lake Jackson. She was the youngest of three children of Abraham Quintanilla Jr. and Marcela, his wife. At a young age, Abraham had a strong passion for music that he still has. During the 1950s and 1960s, him and his friends made a group called “Los Dinos” and played at nightclubs and restaurants. A Guatemalan native, a male graduate student that I work with in my research group at the University told this story. He came from the countryside, living in a small village back home. According to him, the story of La Llorona, involving a weeping woman, arose sometime in the 1700s and became well known both at school and home. Some claimed to have actually seen the weeping woman. Some disregard it as unscientific and implausible. No one is sure of the exact origin of this urban legend. This story was told to me and another graduate student in our research group while sitting in lab waiting for the experiment results. The story began as we started sharing our own background and the culture of our own countries when the storyteller decided to make a little shift and started to tell a story told to him by his older cousin--the story of La Llorona:

There are many times throughout the book that I believe they are directed toward God or the supernatural. For example, as the father and son are on their journey on the road they get 'lucky' quit a few times. When they were starving they found a house full of food and later on found a flare gun and blankets. Each of these times that they seemed to get 'lucky', I believe that they were miracles from God. Another thing is when the father found the flare gun on the boat and said that the boat was named "Pajaro de Esperanza" which means bird of hope. In the bible the dove symbolizes a bird of hope and that could have been a sign that they were going to be okay. Something else is when the father is dying and looks at the book it says "He watched

To elaborate, Abraham's restaurant was based on Mexican food and even though Selena could not speak fluent Spanish her father pushed her to sing in Spanish because that was part of her culture and who she was.To add on, a lot of Selena's fashion was inspired by a lot of Hispanic themed cultures. Her performing clothes reflected her Mexican heritage by the colors and designs.
After all of that happened I knew that my whole family was going to change because of this terrible incident. That was the saddest thing about that because La’maya really brought my family together. I don’t know why, but it did and that was a exciting thing for me. This really was a blessing for my family because before her my family didn’t really hang with each other they were always arguing and just boring. But after the baby passed everything changed. The day after I found out I didn’t cry until I got to school and I had a basketball game that day. I didn’t want to play basketball or nothing. I just wanted to go home then go home and get back in the bed. But that didn't happen I went to the basketball game and for some reason I just felt
“And this is where the needle got stuck in my finger.” The diminutive woman sitting in her broken chair chuckles as she points to the now-healed scar on her left pointer finger. “But don’t worry,” she says in a reassuring manner in her thick Portuguese accent, “the blood was very little.” Camila Rodriguez meditates briefly in that moment, smiling as she reflects on her first time at a sewing machine, some thirty years ago, shortly after her arrival in America. At the age of thirty-one, she accompanied her husband, who started Charles River Park Cleaners, a hybrid of a dry cleaning shop and a tailor service.
