The Legacy of Michael Jordan
When someone mentions basketball, what comes to mind? For some it could be their favorite sport. It could be a little child’s dream to play professional basketball. But, for most people, they are reminded of the greatest basketball player to ever play the game. I remember growing up playing basketball in my driveway, counting down the seconds for the last shot. My brother and I would pretend we were one person; that person was Michael Jordan. He has always been one of the biggest icons of all sports. Jordan is the most influential player to ever play the game of basketball. Not only has he influenced the game of basketball itself, but he has influenced society and the city of Chicago in a major way.
There has always been a debate on who is the greatest basketball player to ever play the game. Many sports analysts have said that you could compare today’s best players to Jordan. Personally, I disagree. Michael Jordan completely changed the way fans looked at the sport of basketball. Not only by his play, but by his mentality going into every game. No one wanted to win more than Michael Jordan, and few ever did. Jordan ended his career with six NBA championships, five Most Valuable Player awards, six finals Most Valuable Player awards, 14-time All Star selections, nine All-Defensive 1st team selections, while leading the NBA in scoring ten times. Based on these accomplishments, most people would without a doubt say that Jordan is the greatest player to ever play the game of basketball. But, it isn’t all about accolades and statistics. Although there are many athletes Michael Jordan has influenced, it isn’t just athletes that he impacted. In an article written by Jeff Coga, he lists all the important things he took from watching Michael Jordan. He learned the true meaning of working hard, being relentless but staying humble, and how to push your teammates to become better. Jeff Coga related every one of those points to business and how he has used them throughout his career (Coga n.p.). The point is, Michael Jordan is and always will be the most idolized player in all of sports. Whether it’s a basketball player, football player, olympic swimmer, or even a business man dreaming of being like Jordan, he will always be the most idolized athlete of all sports.
