In the 1950’s, men adored her and women wanted to be her. Marilyn Monroe was the sex icon of her time and her legacy continually lives on today. It is hard to believe, but she was not always known as Marilyn Monroe. The name she was given at birth was Norma Jean Mortenson. Many people also do not know the story of Monroe’s youth, but she was not born into fame as some Hollywood stars are. Starting at a young age Monroe lived in foster homes and was transferred between them for most of her youth. When she became of age, she was able to escape this life of foster homes by getting married. Marilyn Monroe’s fame grew as she went from being a model, than an actress, and, again, as she made an attempt at producing her own films.

The emergence of Rock and Roll contributed to the birth of the ‘rebel’ by giving teenagers an excuse to disobey their parents through the expression of music. Adults of the 1950’s insisted that Rock and Roll corrupted the minds of the youth. This revolution in music not only affected the decade from an entertainment standpoint, but also from a fashion perspective. Existentialism became a popular philosophy during the 1950’s, which emphasized the individual. The true meaning of this movement was vague, but followers believed that society was trying to control their every action. Many authors and philosophers of this decade wrote on the subject of existentialism, including Flannery O’Connor. Flannery O’Connor’s short story, “Good Country People,” was published in 1955 and demonstrates the 1950’s view of existentialism through the use of symbolism and irony.

    Probably the most celebrated of all actresses, Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jean Mortenson on June 1, 1926, in Los Angeles General Hospital. Prior to her birth, Marilyn's father bought a motorcycle and headed north to San Francisco, abandoning the family in Los Angeles. Marilyn grew up not knowing for sure who her father really was. Her mother, Gladys, had entered into several relationships, further confusing her daughter as to who it was who fathered her.
