The author Ernest Hemingway defined courage as " grace under pressure ",and I believe the actions of the narrator's mother in " The Leap " by Louise Erdrich proves this new definition. The narrator's mother conducts several courageous acts , and they all have one thing in common - they were done impulsively . The mother didn't have time to think through her decision , she just had time to act . One moment in particular that proves Hemingway's statement is when the mother's gracefulness enabled her to jump into the window of the burning house to rescue her daughter while the branch that had supported her fell to the ground. Throughout the story, the narrator speaks of her mother’s grace and in moments when that grace was put under pressure,
