In “The Lady with the Dog” by Anton Chekhov, begins with an affair that turns into something more meaningful than the main characters intend or expect it to be. Both of them are on vacation in Yalta, away from their spouses. During the story we see how and when the characters change according to the events in their lives. The end of the story is realistically possible because there is no idea of what may happen next.
This short story is divided into four sections. First section is about Anna Sergeveyna and Dmitri Gurov’s initial meeting in Yalta. The way Chekhov begins this story it shows us that Dmitri is nothing but a “ladies man”. Second section is about their affair with one another. He is content watching her with her dog, yet no one knew who she was other than “the lady with the dog”. Gurov reflected, “If she is here without a husband and without friends, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to get acquainted with her”, (Mays 291), when he notices that no one is with her. When speaking about women he refers to them as teh “lower race”. One night at dinner he intentionally calls her dog over to him just to get her to talk to him. Irina Kirk says, “The rounds of dinners, card games, and conversations no longer distract Gurov from his loneliness”.(Kirk 347) The third section is about Dmitri going to Anna’s hometown more specifically to her house but only after constantly thinking and dreaming about her. One day his wife made a comment to him, “The part of a lady killer does not suit you at all, Dimitri.”(Mays 297) Here, he thought no one would notice how he was being different, even though he could feel it. Dmitri attempts to tell a friend about the affair. He had trouble sleeping and thinking. He was so tired of his life in Moscow. Gurov risks everything not just for him but for Anna by going to her hometown. He goes to her house but decides it was best for him not to make things worse for Anna by going up to the stir. Instead he decides to go to the theater hoping to see her there. Dmitri goes to the theater in hopes of running into Anna. Anna and Dmitri talk to one another outside of the theater.
