When you begin to take the first step onto the ladder of life, it is difficult to go in blind. At least according to my dad, Bob Jackson, as he made his way through his young life, he didn’t know where to begin. With a father who worked shift work at a factory, there was little to go off of. Yet as I talked to him, I realized that no matter what path you travel down, change can always be for the better.
Coming out of high school, my dad was caught between a rock and a hard place, not knowing what careers, colleges, or opportunities were out there, he jumped straight into a world of craziness, with little guidance. Being the oldest child in his family, and coming from a town like Brainerd, Minnesota, he only had his parents to base his future off of. Yet, what his dad did was the last thing he wanted to do. Working shift work at Potlatch Paper Company was not within his radar. His only option was to jump straight into college. My dad began his generals at Brainerd Community College, and was looking into furthering his college career in pharmacy.
As he made his way through the college experience, he realized BCC could only take him so far. After two years of hard work, he made his way to North Dakota State University, and tried to enter the pharmacy program. Yet, I knew my dad wasn’t into pharmacy, so I asked what happened to that dream, and what a response I got. Dad said, “With the high demand of pharmacists at the time, the program was only taking students whose cumulative high school and college GPA’s were a perfect 4.0, so I decided to switch to polymers and coatings. Yet after I started studying that, I realized I didn’t want to work in that field, so I switched to organic chemistry because the classes were similar.” As he...

...ugh the travel took him away from home, he also got to see many neat places, including most of the continental United States, as well as Bussan, South Korea. As my dad made his way through sales, he went from Sales Engineer to Sales Manager, yet he still had the same job description just with added responsibilities
As, Dads career’s progressed he has now moved into the position of President at Stern. His duties have risen to being responsible for most of the previous positions he once had, that include, sales, customer service, engineering, quality assurance, and production, still dad has plans to go even further.
So in conclusion, I found a person who started in one position and never saw himself going any further. Yet, as he started to find satisfaction in what he was doing, he realized others saw further potential, and decided to climb the ladder to success.
I am Nursing major and with that degree to become a Nurse Practitioner who specializes in the Cardiovascular System to reduce the rate of heart diease in America. I am a hardworking individual and I take my academics very seriously. I understand that I am at school for a purpose and know my purpose is to further my education. I am just trying to make it. My parents always told me growing up “ In order to get something you never had that I will have to do things I have never done.” No one prepared me for college, because I am a first generation college student. In addition to being a first generation college student ; I am also a first generation high school graduate. I use my my parents trials and tribulations as my motivation, because I want
Nearly everyone has the desire to be successful in their lives, whether it be measured in the amount of wealth a man owns or the accomplishments he has made in his life. Therein lies the most common, the success in a man's profession. There are multiple approaches to this connotation of success where a wide range of techniques can be applied. One might think that the only way to reach a particular level of success is to take on a competitive nature and achieve that coveted position of number 1. However, being competitive does not necessarily insure that a person is ‘successful.’ They must be competent in their field to reach the top spot. An example of these two sides can be found within Arthur Miller’s Death of A Salesman using the characters Willy and Bernard.
Since my early schooling days, science and mathematics have always fascinated me given that all components of the world are explained on the basis of these disciplines. In this regard, Pharmacy which is based on Chemistry and Mathematics has interested me a great deal as it has direct impacts on our daily lives. The more I have become familiar with the chemistry and mathematics knowledge involved in pharmacy, the more I have appreciated its significance in improving the lives of people in the community. Out of the many careers that one would opt to pursue, Pharmacy has stood out as the career that will enable me serve the society more directly and have a real impact in the quality of peoples’ lives by touching their health. In addition, I love a career that is challenging and one that I will be involved in even in old age. In this case, Pharmacy offers me this opportunity. My interest in Pharmacy has also developed from my personal health experiences and becoming aware of its expansiveness. Every time I have had to take medicine to cure an illness, I have become more interested to know how drugs are made and how the drug components work in the human body to alleviate pain and restore health. I desire to pursue a career in Pharmacy so as to gain practical experience in these aspects of research.
Starting college is an intense and confusing event that plagues all recent high school graduates. It is like trying to run when all you can do is crawl, and for many freshmen, myself included, one can get easily overwhelmed by the daunting task of picking a major when less than two months ago some of our parents still packed our lunches for us every morning. The concept of entering college tends to be frequently skewed and expecting an eighteen year old to decide what they want to do for the rest of their lives, without having them actually experiment in different areas, has the potential to create a generation of adults who are aggravated and depressed in their careers.
My college career started with me just going to school to take PE classes while neglecting my main required core classes and always pushing them aside without any urgency to succeed in finishing school. A couple of years would go by with little to no progress and lack of motivation to succeed in finishing my college required classes. Soon landing a career oriented job and finding myself dropping out of college to focus on my work career. From this point and time I would learn the importance of school and the value of finish college through my years of experience at work. This awareness of value in finishing college would motivate me to want to go back to school. Soon I would find myself at American River College counseling center. Here I was coming back to school unsure of myself and in an environment where I previously never found success in school. After meeting with my counselor I was recommended to take a college success course. This course is part of a program called the Accelerated College Education (ACE). Because I was able to learn along the years being out of school the importance of gaining an education I gained a new motivation for school, signed up for this ACE program, and enroll in the college success
The stereotypical version of the normal life of a teenager proceeding to college would include high academic standards met throughout their high school career and outstanding outside testing scores resulting in automatic entry into the institution of their choice. Many of these individuals have the support of their accomplished family members in the form of financial support. There are those who have not had the luxuries of any easy upbringing but forced to decide between a life with a college degree or full-time employment. For myself I want to have it all and to achieve that I have taken on both.
I have been interested in studying Pharmacy since my experience in my home country of Eritrea highlighted by the basic health care system existing there, and I have had the first-hand experience of how the lack of medication affects a community's health. When I moved to the UK and studied GCSE Science I was further convinced that pharmacy is the career that I wanted to pursue. This shaped my choice of A-levels in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics. Working in a pharmaceutical field will give me the opportunity to make a difference in the community health. I consider myself suitable for this role.
During high school, I had a supportive parent who expected me to go to college, which has presented me with a multitude of opportunities. However, many students do not have support and may be unaware of their options following high school. I would love to work with students with limited resources find a way to attend college or have a successful career without a college degree.
There are several qualities to have to be successful in college. These qualities can range from attending class to going above and beyond what’s expected. Success comes from the journey taken or the path chosen. Success also comes from being prepared. As a student, I must step up to the challenge and find the path to success along the way. Several ways I define success is to uphold academic integrity, have the ability to prioritize, and to motivate myself to stay on top of what needs to be accomplished.
Pursuing pharmacy as a profession derives deeply from my self-interest in studying pharmacology and medicinal chemistry. While attending a seminar held at the University of Minnesota by Dr. James R. Fuch, I witness the importance of drug kinetics, bioavailability, toxicity and how drugs are administered. It is then that ignited my curiosity into wanting to learn more about applying chemistry into health care and research. After completing a Drug and Alcohol Pharmacology course and attending various medicinal pharmaceutical chemistry seminars, I was self convinced that becoming a clinical research pharmacist is the right career path. Recognizing that the pharmacy profession is not just a four-year commitment to the program, but a life term obligation
I started college ten years ago with the hopes of graduating back in 2010. That dream was derailed multiple times due to my life being “more about the past than their future,” (Palahniuk, 1999, p. 117) but in the fall of 2015, I started for a third time and proved to myself that I do have the determination to continue this dream. As for my parents, they’ve helped support me each time I tried my hand at school. They are the first people I’ve called after receiving a grade on a tough exam or assignment I’ve worked hours on, they’ve let me read them papers or presentations for opinions on flow and content, and they encourage me to try my hardest, to never give up. I would love to repay their hours of support by finishing my bachelors for them
While there are many things standing in my way, my experiences have prepared me. My mother’s kidney disease shows me the importance of being financially prepared for the unexpected. My dad’s hard work and sacrifice has shown me how to be a hard-working woman and to put others before myself. And most importantly, I have learned that no matter a person’s race, gender, or class, you never truly know a person’s
As I have grown up and experienced college, I have encountered numerous people and fellow students aspired to become engineers and doctors, all eager to become esteemed members of the community because of the status such careers bring. I, however, have always been drawn to the career path of pharmacy and becoming a contributing member of my community in that particular outlet. A pharmacy is in many ways a pillar of a community’s overall health and wellbeing as well as a valuable resource for medical and insurance related information. As a young person, I had always wondered what went on behind the high desks and cabinets in a pharmacy. I was always drawn and curious about the science and technology that was just behind those barriers that would ultimately bring good health to many patients every day. This is what peaked my interested in striving to
My father never attended college and has had trouble keeping a job. He works long hours 7 days a week and regrets not taking his education more seriously. My dad has always told me that I 'm too smart to live the life he lives and that I will go to college so that I can live better than he does. While he has given up on making his life better he has not given up on making sure my future is secure because he knows that I have the ability to do great. A great deal of my confidence comes from his actions and because of it I 've achieved more than I knew I could. I never thought I would go to a college and pursue a degree I always figured I 'd go to a trade school. Now I 'm at a school with more ambition than just earning a four year degree I 'm positive that I can earn my masters and plan on doing just that when I graduate. I have learned that I can achieve anything I put my mind to as long as I continue to have my confidence. However, my confidence has more than one source within my
Though pharmacy school is long and arduous for many, for me it was a journey that I wanted to make the most of. Each year I learned more and I developed more, not only as a student, but as a person as well. Even still, I wasn’t sure exactly what I would do with my pharmacy degree until I entered into the fourth and fifth years of my degree program. It was then that I began taking classes in therapy
