The Lacnian Psychoanalysis of desire in Narcissus and Goldmund
The desire behind the characters in Narcissus and Goldmund is not always blatantly obvious as we might like to think. Sometimes to understand the desire and how it functions in this novel, you need to look through a different lens to examine the inner workings of the main characters. To do this it is required to employ some type of psychological theory in order to understand the actions and what they mean. I will be using Lacanian psychoanalysis and will examine the desire of the main character of Goldmund, from the Herman Hesse novel Narcissus and Goldmund, in terms of Lacan and his theories.
In order to examine the titular character and his desire, you must first understand the underlying concepts of Lacanian psychoanalysis. The Lacanian school of psychology is a stark departure from the earlier Freudian school of psychology as it is concerned with the relationship to culture as opposed to biology (Eagleton 142). The main tenet of this ideology, according to Lacan in the eleventh of his seminars, states that humans are born into a condition of ‘lack’ (IX). This ‘lack’ is to mean an absence of something important. This object is referred to as the ‘real’, which can in turn described as the existence we inhabited before birth (Eagleton 161). According to these ideals, the ultimate goal in life is to chase after the ‘real’ by finding ‘signifiers’ that signify the ‘real’ (Eagleton 161).This means that throughout your life you will try and find the ‘real’ you once had using the different ‘signifiers’ that are encountered acting as waypoints on the journey to your ‘desire’.

...t” (310). The reasons you cannot exist with your ‘real’ I suggest is the idea that the real exists beyond so many things such as language and symbolism, which are arguably a majority of the world we inhabit.
As we have seen through my analysis of this novel, the ideals of Lacanian psychoanalysis can be applied to situations found throughout the novel in order to interpret the actions of the main character. We have seen that Goldmund has developed through the different phases of development set forth by Lacan in his work. We also have identified that the ‘desire’ of the main character is to meet his mother, while his ‘signifiers’ are the many women that he has brief relationships with. From this interpretation of Goldmund and his desire, you can see that Lacanian psychoanalysis is an effective and exceptionally useful way to approach critically examining literature.
Obsession is defined as “an unhealthy and compulsive preoccupation with something or someone” (1), and is a prominent theme (in) The Great Gatsby, Enduring Love and Othello. For example, in all three, there is a great desire to obtain things which are unattainable, and in turn this fuels their obsession and causes it to intensify. Furthermore, the act of being obsessive is a common human characteristic, which enforces the fact that obsession is a key element throughout all the texts. Othello has the desire to seek revenge. Fitzgerald shows the desire of lust for Gatsby to have Daisy, whilst also allowing him to accomplish a social desire of fulfilling the American Dream, which was typical of the 1920’s as people were searching for wealth and status after the economic boom. However Enduring Love By Ian McEwan shows an infatuation between Jed and Joe rather than actual love which also shows an infatuation between Jed and Joe rather than actual love which also shows both the acceptance and denial of homosexuality. One cannot convict any of these characters for perusing in their actions, as the obsession manipulates all concepts of moral absolutes, which allows them to take no consequences for their further undertakings.
The composer has aimed this text for general reading by all people over the age of ten. However as this publication is the young reader’s edition, it is targeted at young readers. People who may wish to read the book may be able to attain it through mediums such as book stores and libraries etc. Although this publication of the novel is the young reader’s edition, there is a publication aimed at adults.
This novel and film commentary analysis or interpretation will be first summarised and then critiqued. The summary will be divided into twenty- four episodes. While summarising it is well to remember that the film was made out of the book.

The central figures in these three works are all undoubtedly flawed, each one in a very different way. They may have responded to their positions in life, or the circumstances in which they find themselves may have brought out traits that already existed. Whichever applies to each individual, or the peculiar combination of the two that is specific to them, it effects the outcome of their lives. Their reaction to these defects, and the control or lack of it that they apply to these qualities, is also central to the narrative that drives these texts. The exploration of the characters of these men and their particular idiosyncrasies is the thread that runs throughout all of the works.

Psychoanalysis is the method of psychological therapy originated by Sigmund Freud in which free association, dream interpretation, and analysis of resistance and transference are used to explore repressed or unconscious impulses, anxieties, and internal conflicts (“Psychoanalysis”). Psychoanalytic Theory itself has, what seems to be, two contradictory halves: Freudian psychoanalysis and Lacanian psychoanalysis. The first half focuses solely on the author and the unconscious mind; the second considers the unconscious, but prefers to concentrate on outside influences by deconstructing the text itself. According to Freud, interpretation is achieved by examining conflicts and symbols, such as Freudian slips and dream images. These outlets are help to determine whether an individual’s external behavior coincides (or conflicts) with their internal emotion. Freud placed emphasis on sexuality and the Oedipus complex, which is the idea of repressed sexual feelings toward a parent of opposite sex. He also defined three levels of the subconscious mind: the ego, the super-ego, and the id. Barry explains that the stages align with “the consciousness, the conscience, and the unconscious” respectively (93). On the other hand, Lacan, a follower of Freud, concentrated on the relationship between an author and his or her work. He claimed the two were inexorably connected, that objectivity is nonexistent. Peter Gay, being a professional on Freud, is attacking the critics of psychohistory, and even more in depth the psychoanalytic historian. The main point of the text is to emphasize to its critics that psychoanalysis can help historians not only learn what happened in history, but why events happened. "Psychoanalysis...is not a miracle drug or a magic password; it is an informed style of inquiry, supplying answers no one had thought were available before or - even more important- suggesting questions no one had thought to ask" (p. 32, 33).
With each analysis the reader gets a greater understanding of suicide and the mental state of those who commit it, as well as some of their motives. One could read only a single chapter of this book and gain a greater understanding than they previously had on the topic of suicide, but when one brings all the chapters together as a whole a much deeper understanding is obtained. Lester’s analyses start with diaries, using that of a girl he has called Katie as his first example. In this 14 page chapter he analyses her diary, not only comparing her to Ophelia from William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, but using that comparison to show some of her motives and to make sense of them. It is this astute analysis that sets the tone for the rest of the similar chapters, in a way that is not boring but is not lighthearted in the slightest. The way that the whole book works together to give one insight on the topic of suicide makes it a useful resource for those who wish to understand it in a more in-depth way.
Psychoanalysis had its beginning with the discovery that a person in complete physical health could experience an illness with physical symptoms that stemmed from things trapped in the subconscious known as hysteria. Charcot, a French neurologist tried to liberate the mind through hypnosis. A Viennese physician, Josef Breuer, carried this purging further with a process based on his patient, Anna O., revealing her thoughts and feelings to him. Sigmund Freud took Breuer’s method and made generalizations that grew into conceptualizations and eventually into the theories of psychoanalysis. Freud would listen to his patients, and then use these thoughts to interpret what was happening in the unconscious part of their mind. This was explained as bringing the unconscious to consciousness so it could be dealt with through therapy. Breuer and Freud’s successes with this method led to the foundational publication of Studies in Hysteria in 1895. Freud continued his practice of theory until it became the system of psychology known as psychoanalysis, a system that is the single most influential theory of psychotherapy in our time. A brief look into psychoanalysis is seen through the foundations of Freud’s theory.
This essay will place Beauvoir’s criticism of Freudian Psychoanalysis (FP), The Psychoanalytic Point of View in context by discussing criticisms of FP made prior to Beauvoir’s work as well as those made after. Through this analysis, Beauvoir’s work will be portrayed as influenced by the spirit of the age in which it arose.
